The calendar has turned to the a new school year and that means the OSSAA high school Fall baseball season will be here soon. The season officially gets underway on August 10, but teams can play games before then if both teams have already started school.

Up until that the beginning of the season, SSBR will be providing previews of as many teams as we can. Recently, SSBR sent out questionnaires to the high school coaches across the state of Oklahoma asking for their top returning players, top newcomers, overall strengths/weaknesses, and their overall assessment where their respective programs are coming into the 2026 Fall season.

What you have below are the responses to those questions in the words of the coaches themselves.

Today’s team: Calumet Chieftains

Classification: A

2025 Fall Results: 21-8 (State Champion)

2026 Spring Results: 22-6 (State Champion)

Head Coach: Cody Thiessen

Head coaching experience: 9 years (4 at Calumet)

Top Returners

  • Brendon Voss SR, physical player that will be our leader this year. High average hitter with lots of power.
  • Talon Arnold JR, looks to be the ace of the staff with a fastball that will be in upper 80’s. Also will hit in the top of the lineup for a high average.
  • Konnor Thiessen JR, Will need to accept the role of being the in middle of lineup and a RBI producer. Will play multiple positions on the field and also be relied on the mound to give key innings
  • Wade Reed JR, he will also be a middle of the lineup, hitter and will be a catalyst behind the plate as one of the best catchers on the west side of the state. Controls the run game and does a great job of handling the pitchers.
  • Cale Stilley JR, will be relied on to give major innings on the mound. Has a low 80s fastball and commands the strike zone. Will play in the outfield when not pitching.
  • Hunter Mayfield SR, outfielder that hits for a high average and puts pressure on the defense with his speed.

Top Newcomers

  • Riley Whitebead SR, even though he’s a senior this will be his year to capitalize on the work that he’s done over the last few years.

Team strengths

  • Experience
  • Pitching
  • Defense

Team needs to work on

Finding new leadership and young players learning to step up and play meaningful innings.

Outlook

After being in class B the last four years it looks like Calumet may be class A this year. Learning new roles with the absence of a key returner in Wyatt Cox who suffered a knee injury this summer, Calumet will look to continue the success they’ve had over the last several seasons.
