We are half way into the college season and we are finally to the point where the NJCAA D2 teams in Oklahoma are ready to start their conference portion of their schedules.

Region 2 consists of schools in Oklahoma and Arkansas and 2 more Arkansas schools joined the Division 2 ranks for this season to bring the total number of schools in the Region to 14. With that move, UA Rich Mountain in Mena, AR (just across the OK/AR state line) was joined with the 6 Oklahoma schools while the other 7 Arkansas schools are in the other half.

Starting this week, the Oklahoma schools + UARM will play 4 game series against each other for the remaining 6 weeks of the regular season. When it is said and done, the top 4 will play the top 4 from Arkansas in a double elimination tournament to decided the Region 2 champ.

Heading into this week, the 6 Oklahoma schools have excelled as a whole in non Region play. At different times this season, all 6 schools have either been ranked or have had the equivalent of “receiving votes” in either the NJCAA National Coaches Poll or the The JBB Poll. Currently, 4 of the schools are ranked in either poll (or both).

Heading into Region play on Thursday, the 6 schools have a combined record of 117-36.

Let’s take a look at each one.

NOC Tonkawa, 28-1

The Mavericks have been nothing but dominant so far this season. They have overwhelmed their competition.

They are led by Blade Carver who is 5th in batting average (.427), first in HRs (13) and tied for 1st in RBI (46) in the Region. Eric Harper is 3rd in AVG (.438), and tied for 2nd in HRs (9) with teammates Aidan Zakerwicz and Joey Canzoni. Zakerwicz (39) and Canzoni (38) are 4th and 5th respectively in RBIs.

As a team, the Mavs are slashing .402/.508/.747 with 61 HR and 343 RBI. They are averaging over 13 runs/game.

On the mound, Logan Taylor is 2nd in ERA (1.03) and strikeouts (48). He is tied for 1st in wins with teammate, Kamden Edge at 6.

As a team, the Mavs have a team ERA of 1.78 with a WHIP of 0.98.

NOC Enid, 20-5

The Jets have shown how deep they are this season. They have 7 hitters who have played in at least 20 games that have batting averages over .300. Jhett Creel leads this group with an average of .410. Jesse Ponce (.395) and Rhen Rutledge (.364) come in at 2nd and 3rd. While the Jets don’t have any player with more than 3 HRs, they do have 6 hitters with multiple bombs. Much like their HRs, the RBIs are spread out over their lineup with 7 hitters with at least 17 RBI (led by Cooper Smith at 28).

As a team, the Jets are slashing .333/.479/.516 with 18 HR, 179 RBIs. They are averaging over 8 runs/game.

Cale Wetwiska leads the Jets on the mound. The DBU commit has an ERA of 3.49 with WHIP of 1.31. He is averaging over 9 Ks/9 inn.

As a team, the Jest have a team ERA of 5.32 with a WHIP of 1.54.

Carl Albert State, 19-5

The Vikings have quietly built a solid resume coming into the Region season. CASC has not lost a series yet this season and they’ve not lost back to back games.

Kip Christian leads the Vikings in batting average at .474 which is 2nd best in the Region. His 6 HR also lead the team while his 24 RBI is 2nd on the team to Keypher Contreras who has 28.

As a team, the Vikings are slashing .317/.443/.488 with 19 HR and 183 RBI. They are averaging just under 9 runs/game.

Gage Elliot leads the Vikings on the mound. In his 6 starts, Elliot is 5-0 with an ERA of 2.00 which is 3rd best in the Region. Teammate, Trenton Golden also has an ERA of 2.00 in 27 IP out of the bullpen.

As a team, the Vikings have a team ERA of 3.25 with a WHIP of 1.56.

Murray State, 16-10

The Aggies have played the toughest schedule of the 6 teams with series against Blinn, Connors State, and LSU Eunice.

Murray State has been impressive at the plate this season. Austin Hailey leads the Region with an AVG of .523 and Michael Barham lead the Region in RBI with 46. Of their 9 qualifying hitters, 7 Aggies have an AVG of at least .350. Six of their hitters also have multiple bombs on the season.

As a team, the Aggies are slashing .346/.463/.565 with 36 HR and 245 RBI. The Aggies are averaging over 10 runs/game.

Cash Kuiper and Austin Hailey lead the Aggies on the mound. Kuiper has made 7 starts and has pitched 36 innings. His 46 strikeouts are good for 3rd in the Region. Hailey has made 6 starts for 28.1 IP. He also has just one less K than Kuiper at 45.

As a team, MSC has an ERA of 5.41 with a WHIP of 1.55.

Redlands CC, 19-8

No one has had the turn around this season like what the Cougars have had. They’ve already won more games than they won last year (14). So far, Redlands looks like they could be a contender to make the Region Tournament this year.

At the plate, the Cougars have 8 qualifying hitters that are above .300. They are led by Easton Ford in this category who has an average of .463 (his OBP is .557). Easton Andrews has the most homeruns in the Region from someone who isn’t on the NOC Tonkawa team. Andrews has 7 bombs and leads the team with 40 RBI. At the top of the lineup, Nate Anderson is getting on base at a .455 clip which is good because he is 4th in the Region with 18 stolen bags.

As a team the Cougars are slashing .332/.447/.497 with 21 HR and 225 RBI. They are averaging over 9 runs/game.

On the mound, the strength of this team is the bullpen. Brett Trease and Brodie Andrews lead the team in ERA with 2.29 and 2.41 respectively. They both have 8 apperances apiece and Trease has logged 19.2 IP while Andrews has 18.2 IP.

As a team the Cougars have an ERA of 5.81 and a WHIP of 1.74.

Western OK State, 15-7

If Murray State has played the toughest schedule so far, the Pioneers have played the next toughest.

Out of the 6 Oklahoma schools, WOSC has been the least potent offense. They are slashing .296/.408/.473. All of those numbers are the lowest of the six squads. They have 27 HR, but only 143 RBI which is over 30 fewer than the next team. The Pioneers are averaging just over 7 runs/game.

Jerdy Lopez leads the team offensively with a .400 avg. He has 18 stolen bases on the season.

Where Western makes up for the offense is on the mound. As a team the Pioneers have an ERA of 3.89 with a WHIP of 1.52.

Jeylem Sepulveda leads the Pioneers on the bump. He has 6 appearances with 4 of them starts. He’s pitched 26 innings and his ERA of 0.41 leads the Region.
