This past Spring we started recognizing players and pitchers of small colleges and JUCOs weekly.
This Fall we wanted to extend that recognitions to our talented high school players here in the Sooner State as well.
Each week we send out nomination forms to the coaches to complete and we will choose a position player and pitcher from each class (2A, A, B) for the weekly award. The winners will receive something from SSBR for their achievement and each player/pitcher nominated will be listed in our weekly post.
Here are our winners for Week 4 (9/2-9/7)

Class 2A
*We first need to say that it is getting harder and harder to pick just one player or pitcher each week. We are seeing some outstanding performances from the players across the state. Just because a player or pitcher wasn’t selected, that doesn’t diminish the week they had.
Player of the Week
Mason Pickering, Oktaha Tigers
If you’ve followed the Oktaha Tigers since last fall, you know that Mason Pickering has been a staple in the middle of the Tigers’ lineup. Head coach, Kevin Rodden, recently move Pickering to the top of the lineup. What a weapon to have at the top of the lineup it is.
This past week, the Austin Peay commit put up middle of the lineup numbers. He had 5 extra base hits (2 HR, 3 2B) and an OPS of 1.873. On top of that, he did what a lead off man is traditionally supposed to do and scored 5 runs in 4 games.
Pickering’s line: 4 Games: .455 (5-11), .600 OBP, 1.873 OPS, 2 HR, 3 2B, 2 RBI, 4 BB, 5 R

- Bryce Vandenburg, Silo: .625 (5-8), 3 2B, 6 RBI, BB
Pitcher of the Week
Darren Ledford, Oktaha Tigers
Once again we saw some outstanding performances on the mound. However, it was the situation that gave Ledord the every so slightly edge.
Coming off of 3 straight losses in the week, Oktaha was facing a solid Calera team on Saturday afternoon desperately needing a win.
After giving up an unearned run in the 1st inning, Ledford settled down and was dominant the rest of the way allowing the Tigers to have a comfortable win over a solid team.
Ledford’s line: (W), CG, SO, 7 IP, 5 H, R, 0 ER, 10 K
Other nominees:
- Hunter McElhannon, Preston: 1-0, 7 IP, 3 H, R, 0 ER, 13 K

- Landon Langley, Silo: 1-0, CG 7 IP, 3 H, ER, 5 K, 2 BB
Class A
Player of the Week
Boston Baker, Canute Trojans
It is the 2nd time the Player of the Week award is heading out west to Canute as Boston Baker was near impossible to get out this past week. The Trojans went 5-0 on the week and Baker is a huge reason why.
Batting in the bottom 3rd of the lineup, the freshman provided a huge spark and was the “2nd lead off man” that teams look for.
Baker’s line: .786 (11-14), .824 OBP, HR, 2B, 6 RBI, 3 BB
Other nominees:
- Gavin Hull, Wellston: .429 (3-7), .500 OBP, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 HBP, 2 SB
Pitcher of the Week
Kase Lindly, Wright City Lumberjax
Wright City has one of the best rotations of any school in the state and Lindly has now been nominated by Head Coach, Kyle Butler for the 2nd week in a row.
Lindly showed what he can do both as a close and as a starter as he was almost unhittable in 8 innings of work. In game that was closer than what people thought it would’ve been, Lindly came in relief in the 7th inning against Red Oak and went 1-2-3 to earn the save. Then in one of the biggest games of the week, Lindly had a complete game shutout over then SSBR #8 Byng.
Lindly’s line: G 2, 1-0, SV, CG, SO, 8 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 8 K, BB
Other nominees:
- Kade Bozeman, Wellston: 4 IP, 2 H, 6 K
- Dillon Lucas, Canute: 1-0, CG, 7 IP, 2 H, 3 K, 3 BB
Class B

Cody Cook, Stuart Hornets
Nobody likes to lose the tournament they’re hosting, right? Well Stuart didn’t have to worry about that as they won theirs and Cody Cook was a big reason why.
For the tournament, Cook batted .500 with 6 RBI and scored 5 runs as the Hornets beat Kiowa, Silo JV, and Ripley.
Cook’s line: .417 (5-12). .500 OBP, 2B, 6 RBI, 2 BB 5 R

- Talon Arnold, Canute: .500 (4-8). 2 RBI, 4 R
Pitcher of the Week
Aiden Walkup, Tupelo Tigers
Tupelo has not had the season record wise that they are accustomed to having. Going into last Friday, the Tigers had lost 4 in a row and were facing a Red Oak team that had just given Wright City a good game.
Aiden Walkup took the bump and put the team on his back in a game the Tigers needed to win. Setting the tone, Walkup was perfect through 2 innings on his way to a dominant game and allowing his Tigers to cruise to a 3-0 win.
Walkup’s line: 1-0, CG, SO, 7 IP, 0 R, 4 K, 2 BB
