The newest edition of the OSSAA Fall Baseball Rankings are out. As always I take an objective look at these rankings and critique them knowing that some (a minority) of coaches try to use the rankings and manipulate where they’ll go for the post season.
You may remember that last week, I started sharing my top ten in each classification in the spirit of transparency. If I’m going to be critical, I should do my own, right?
Let’s first take a look at who I have in the top ten of each class.

Now, let’s take a look at the OSSAA rankings
Class 2A

Initial thoughts
- All 16 coaches voted this week compared to 13 last week.
- The only movement was Tushka moving up from #8 to at tie for #5. I had them at #4 because they literally beat Oktaha head to head last week.
- Speaking of Oktaha, I just don’t see how they can be #3 at this point at 9-7. I had them at #5, but that was a precarious #5 at that.
Class A

- We’ve got all but one coach voting.
- We’ve got Wright City as a lone #1 this week after being tied with Rattan last week. That’s the way it should be because Wright City beat Rattan head to head.
- I had Rattan at #3 with Okarche #2 based on the fact that the Rams had lost 3 in a row the week before.
- They lost their 1st place vote, but Arapaho-Butler stayed at #4 which is puzzling seeing how they went 1-2 last week with a loss to AmPo who is right behind them.
- I had Canute at #4 compared to the coaches holding at #7. A 4-0 shutout win over FCB should hold more weight that that especially going 5-0 last week.
Class B

- We had 9 more coaches vote this week compared to last week. That is a lot of variance and it is hard to be consistent.
- The top 3 are where they should be although. Calumet got 7 more 1st place votes, FCB got 4 more, and Stuart lost their lone 1st place vote.
- Still don’t understand why Boswell isn’t number 4. I’m not saying they should have the 1st pace vote they have, but after the top 3, Boswell has the most impressive resume up to this point.
- The next 6 or so spots are a bunch of even teams. It’ll be interesting to see how it shakes out.
- Caney should not be in the top 10. They are 3-4 in their last 7 with 3 of those losses coming to teams ranked behind them (Battiest, Mill Creek, Moss).
- Mill Creek and New Lima should be getting more votes. They both have good records and New Lima has the most wins in the state at this point. Yes, the Falcons’ schedule may not be the toughest, but wins should hold more weight than it seems to be doing.
So there you have it. I’ll be honest. The rankings are way better than they were in the first week they came out. Kudos to the coaches for making some corrections.
