During the 2023 high school season, SSBR started a high school “Dominant Dozen” rankings. These rankings were meant to showcase who was thought to be the best teams in the state relative to their classification.

Does that mean we think that a class A team can consistently beat several 6A teams? Some could, but the depth at the higher classes is seemingly higher and there are more stronger teams the higher the class you go.

*That is not to take anything away from small school baseball. There are SEVERAL small schools playing baseball at a high level. Seriously, we love small school ball – just look at our Fall Ball coverage.

Last year’s rankings were done as a one man show. This year they are done by committee and use a points system (1st place = 12 pts, 2nd place = 11 pts, etc). That is why you may see ties.

For the first week’s rankings we looked at results + what we think the potential of the teams are. As we go forward, it will be all about the results.

And as always, this is for fun so please take it that way.

Teams That Dropped Out

Choctaw (PR: T5): Last week: 1-1; Elk City (PR: T7): Last week: (2-1); Silo (PR: 10): Last week: 2-2; Calumet (PR: 12): Last week: 1-1

Teams Receiving Votes (In alphabetical order)

Bixby Spartans (6A), 10-2; Choctaw Yellowjackets (6A), 7-1

12. Oktaha Tigers (2A), 6-2

Previous week: 9

The Tigers went 1-1 last week losing 3-2 to who is arguably the best team in 6A right now, Edmond North, and beating 6A Southmoore 8-2.

Oktaha’s 2 losses this season have come to the Huskies and Carl Albert – 2 teams in the SSBR Dominant Dozen.

This week: Mon vs Locust Grove; Tues vs Wilburton; Thurs vs Glenpool, Fri vs Skiatook a & Branson, Sat vs Tahlequah (Thurs-Sat at Tiger/Zebra Classic)

11. Edmond North Huskies (6A), 9-1

Previous week: 11

Edmond North’s schedule got flipped upside down this past week as rain played havoc with the Edmond Spring Break Festival. As a result the Huskies played only 2 games – a 6-3 win over Sperry and the aforementioned 3-2 win over Oktaha.

This week: Mon/Tues vs Putnam City; Thurs at Piedmont; Fri at Midwest City

9. Stigler Panthers (4A), 8-0

Previous week: NR

Stigler makes a surprising appearance in the Dominant Dozen, but when you are 8-0 after 8 games, you warrant consideration.

To be honest, we don’t know just how good the Panthers are yet, but when you average giving up less than 2 runs a game, you are a team to be reckoned with.

This week: Mon/Tues vs Muldrow; Thurs at Warner

9. Hilldale Hornets (4A), 11-1

Previous week: Receiving votes

Also making their debut in the “Dozen” is the Hilldale Hornets. It’s only fitting they are tied with Stigler at #9 as they are tied with the Panthers atop the district standings.

The Hornets received votes last week as an undefeated team. Hilldale went 3-1 in the Gulf Shores Classic last week and the only other Oklahoma teams that did better are coming up in the rankings.

This week: Mon/Tues vs Checotah; Thurs-Sat at Inola Tournament

7. Lone Grove Longhorns (3A), 12-1

Previous week: NR

Lone Grove is also making their debut in the Dominant Dozen this week, but they are no stranger to being towards the top in class 3A.

The Longhorns lost their 2nd game of the season to Durant and that was what was keeping them out of consideration for the rankings. However, Lone Grove has won 9 straight including avenging the loss to Durant by beating the Lions 8-2 last week.

This week: Mon/Tues vs Frederick; Thurs vs Ada; Fri vs Kingston; Fri vs Sulphur (Thurs-Fri at Murray County Bash)

6. Carl Albert Titans (5A), 7-1

Last week: 4

The Titans didn’t play a game last week so it may seem harsh they dropped in the rankings, but thats what happens in the elite levels of Oklahoma high school baseball.

This week: Mon vs Western Heights (DH); Tues vs Midwest City; Thurs vs Mustang; Fri vs Owasso; Sat vs Union; Sat vs Broken Arrow (Fri-Sat at BA/Jenks Festival)

5. Washington Warriors (3A), 11-1

Last week: 3

Washington took their annual trip to the Gulf Coast and went 4-0 at the Gulf Shores Classic last week. Unfortunately, the Warriors’ run differential wasn’t big enough to make the semifinals to compete for the championship.

This week: Mon at Marietta (DH); Thurs vs Heritage Hall (at Murray County Bash); Fri vs Jones, Fri at OCS

4. Sapulpa Chieftains (5A),12-1

Last week: 5

Sapulpa moves up a spot this week in spite of losing a game last week. When that game is in the semifinals of the Gulf Shores Classic after going 4-0 in pool play, those 4 wins outweigh the loss in the semis.

The Chieftains are a perfect 5-0 in 5A and 3-0 vs 6A teams.

This week: Mon/Tues vs Durant; Thurs vs Enid; Fri vs Bartlesville, Fri vs Sand Springs (Thurs-Fri at Bruin Classic)

3. Dewar Dragons (A), 11-0

Last week: T7

Dewar is one of the last few teams across the state that are still undefeated. They won both of their games in the Wright City Festival before their 3rd game got rained out.

This week: Mon vs Schulter, Mon vs Stonewall; Tues at Warner; Thurs-Sat at Waleetka Tournament

1. Tuttle Tigers (4A), 13-1

Last week: 2

Last week Tuttle dropped out of the top spot after losing a game. This week, the Tigers are tied for 1st after going 5-0 including a come-from-behind walk off win over Weatherford where the Tigers score 5 runs in the 7th inning.

Tuttle has played the toughest schedule relative to their class so far this season and it doesn’t get easier this week.

This week: Mon/Tues vs Bridge Creek; Thurs vs Elgin, Thurs vs Casady; Fri vs Calumet; Sat vs Kingfisher (Thurs-Sat at I-40 Classic)

1. Elgin Owls (5A), 8-0

Last week: 1

The Owls went 2-0 at the Tuttle Spring Break Festival last week beating 2 teams that you could see in the 4A State Tournament – Chickasha and Oologah.

Just like Tuttle, it doesn’t get easier this week – especially since Elgin plays Tuttle on Thursday at the I-40 Classic.

This week: Mon/Tues vs Santa Fe South; Thurs vs Tuttle; Fri vs Okarche, Fri vs Elk City; Sat: vs Fairview
