I’ll admit that before I started Sooner State Baseball Report, my knowledge of small school baseball was not that great. I graduated from Shawnee High School (let’s just say it was a while ago) and my twin boys who graduated in 2022 went to a 6A school. I was used to teams being in districts and how teams finished in those districts was how they were grouped in the postseason.

During the first year of covering Fall baseball for SSBR (in 2023) I soon came to realize that for the Fall season (and Spring season for Classes 2A and lower) that the postseason assignments were based on the OSSAA rankings provided by the coaches. It also became apparent to me that some of the teams’ rankings were “questionable” at best.

These “questionable” rankings became so egregious that I couldn’t hold it in any longer. I began giving commentary on these rankings and continued that through the Fall season of that year. However, while I was giving my “constructive criticism” that year, I thought of some lessons I’ve been taught over the years. Lessons like if you see a problem, find a solution. I don’t know what kind of solution I can provide (other than suggest that coaches’ rankings be made public), but I do know that I can provide what I would think would be a fair rankings for each team.

In 2024 I began to rank my top 10 in each class about half way through the Fall season. Last year I started to shorten that to my top 8 for each class – teams that if the season ended today should host a regional or be a 2 seed depending on the class. Let’s call it my “Eight For State.”

Below you will see who I have as the top 8 in each class. What makes my rankings a little different is they are based not just on potential, but also on results and strength of schedule. At some point those factors have to be considered and teams rewarded or dinged as such.

Class 2A

1. Silo 2. Dale 3. Latta 4. Tushka 5. Oktaha 6. Preston 7. Colbert 8. Byng

Silo stays at #1 with a 27-0 record.

Dale is clearly #2 at this point.

Latta slides into the 3 spot riding an 8 game winning streak.

Tushka has struggled the last 2 weeks, but their overall resume is good enough for the 4th spot.

Oktaha gets the nod over Preston at 5 based on their win over the Pirates at a neutral site in the Silo Tournament.

Colbert beat Ft Cobb-Broxton this past week.

Byng has beaten OCA, Vanoss, and Colbert recently.

Class A

1. Rattan 2. Navajo 3. Canute 4. Wright City 5. Arapaho-Butler 6. Union City 7. AmPo 8. Ripley

Talk about parity. That is what Class A is.

Rattan has a stronghold on the top spot with their 4 losses to Silo (3x) and Dale.

Navajo is a solid 2 as they have 2 wins vs 1 loss over Canute.

Canute has been consistent all season.

Wright City is 7-3 in September and has won their last 4 wins via shutout. They look to have the pitching to compete.

Arapaho-Butler has been solid all season including a 2-0 win over Navajo on Sept 12.

Union City gets the nod at 6 with a win over Wright City earlier this season.

AmPo and Ripley come in at 7 and 8 respectively with 35 wins between them.

Class B

1. Ft Cobb-Broxton 2. Tupelo 3. Calumet 4. Leedey 5. Dover 6. Moss 7. Hammon 8. Asher

Ft Cobb-Broxton has been the class of Class B all season.

Tupelo is a strong 2 after wins vs Wright City and Tushka at the Rattan Fall Classic this past week.

Calumet is playing their best ball this season and their offense can play with anyone.

Leedey comes in at 4 with a 1-1 record vs Dover, but they won the most recent meeting.

Moss is trending upwards riding a 6 game winning streak with one of them over Hammon.

Asher moves back into the top 8 after a runner up finish at the Ripley Tournament.
