The weekly SSBR Fall Elite Eight is sponsored this season by our partner, Conner Darnell Designs. If you have a need for a graphic designer, photographer, or sports media, give Conner a look at his website: connerdarnelldesigns.com.

Here at SSBR we try to have fun with what we do. We cover a sport that is supposed to be fun and we want to convey that in our content.

One of the ways we do it is by doing our version of a ranking system. We take all the teams regardless of classification and do our best to rank them on how they are doing relative to their class.

*In the Spring we have the caveat that says we are not ranking them on a “head to head” basis. In the Fall since teams may play each other regardless of class more regularly, “head to head” is more of a factor.

We also do our rankings based on results more than what we think who would necessarily win a game. If a spot comes down to two teams, if they’ve played head to head the result of that game weighs heavily in that decision. (The first week’s rankings, however, do have what a team’s expectations for the season factored in, but as the season goes along it will be the results that matter.)

In the Spring we do a “Sweet Sixteen. In the Fall we do an “Elite Eight.” because there aren’t as many teams as the Spring, but six is too little for the Fall

As always, this is for fun so please treat it as such.

Dropped Out

  • Leedey Bison (B), PR 6: Last week 1-2: Lost to Ft Cobb-Broxton, Hammon; Beat Vici
  • Navajo Indians (A), PR 7: Last week 2-4: Lost to Dale, Canute (2x), Ft Cobb-Broxton; Beat Ft Cobb-Broxton, Granite

1. Preston Pirates (2A), 17-1

Previous ranking: 1
Last week: 5-0

Another week, another perfect record for Preston. The Pirates beat Glencoe on Tuesday, Kiowa on Thursday, then they went 3-0 to win the Cameron Tournament beating the host school in the championship.

This week: Tues vs Tulsa NOAH, Thurs at Stonewall, Fri vs Frontier & Blair

2. Okarche Warriors (A), 12-1

Previous ranking: 2
Last week: 3-0

Okarche opened the week hosting Class B #1 Calumet beating them 3-1. They won their next 2 games on the road – Friday at AmPo, 7-3, and Saturday vs Wright City at Seminole State, 6-2.

The week 2 loss head to head against Preston keeps the Warriors in the 2nd spot.

This week: Mon vs Hydro-Eakly; Thurs-Sat at AmPo/Okarche Tournament

3. Dale Pirates (2A), 12-3

Previous ranking: 5
Last week: 4-0

Dale had one of, if not the best, week of anyone last week. They started off on Labor Day winning the Hydro-Eakly Labor Day Tournament beating Navajo in the championship. The Pirates went 3-0 in the Asher Festival shutting out Calumet in one of their wins. For the week, Dale outscored their 4 opponents a combined 19-3.

This week: Mon vs Drummond; Thurs-Sat at AmPo/Okarche Tournament

4. Byng Pirates (2A), 9-2

Previous ranking: 3
Last week: 1-1

Byng drops a spot to 4 after going 1-1 last week including getting shut out by Latta, 5-0, on Friday. Before that, the Pirates beat Tupelo, 8-2, on Thursday.

This week: Mon vs #6 Colbert; Thurs-Sat at AmPo/Okarche Tournament

5. Silo Rebels (2A), 11-2

Previous ranking: 4
Last week: 2-1

Silo got snake bit by the weather on Tuesday when their game at Rattan was rained out. The Rebels then played in the Asher Festival going 2-1. In their opener in the Festival, the Rebels’ bats struggled against Calumet losing 3-0. They then went on to beat Asher, 18-6, and Vanoss, 6-0.

This week: Tues at Wright City; Thurs-Sat at Silo Tournament

6. Colbert Leopards (2A), (11-4)

Previous ranking: 8
Last week: 2-0

Colbert only played 2 games last week, but they did what they were supposed to do. They beat Vanoss, 4-0, and Rock Creek, 14-1. When the 2 teams ahead of you in the previous week lose a comined 6 games, you get the nod to move up.

The Leopard have a chance to make a statement this week as they play at Byng on Monday and in a solid Calera Tournament.

This week: Mon at #4 Byng; Tues at Ft Towson; Thurs-Sat at Calera Tournament

7. Stuart Hornets (B), 13-5

Previous ranking: NR
Last week: 3-0

Stuart makes their debut in the Elite Eight for the season this week. The Hornets won their tournament this past week beating Ripley in the finals.

Since starting the season 1-4, the Hornets are 12-1 since then with their lone loss coming to #1 Preston in the finals of the Preston Invitational.

This week: Mon at New Lima; Tues at Battiest; Thurs at Rattan; Fri at Cameron

8. Canute Trojans (A), 14-4

Previous ranking: NR
Last week: 4-0

Canute reenters the Elite Eight after dropping out last week (they are the first team to reenter after dropping out this season). The Trojans went 4-0 last week defeating all Class A teams including 2 wins over then #7 Navajo (avenging an earlier loss to the Indians).

In a Class that looks wide open after Okarche at this point, Canute seems to be a notch above the rest of the class.

This week: Mon at Binger-Oney; Tues vs Fletcher; Thurs-Fri at AmPo/Okarche Tournament

Other Teams Considered (in alphabetical order)

  • Calumet (B), 8-5
  • Ft Cobb-Broxton (B), 9-7
  • Latta (2A), 9-5
