What a busy and long day Thursday was for the State Tournaments. The quarterfinals found saw a total of 40 games played across the five classes (2A-6A). We also saw some weather delays that cause it to be over a 13 hour day before the last game was completed (Dale vs Panama finished around 12:30 a.m.).
For a complete look at the result of each game, you can check our our State Tournament Scoreboard here.
Here are a few things that stood out from the quarterfinal round:
Stillwater has a comeback for the ages
Last night’s game between the Pioneers and Yellowjackets was a microcosm of Stillwater’s season. Start slow, but come storming back and look like a world beater.
Stillwater struggled to start the game. So much so, they had been no hit through the first 5 innings until Ethan Holliday comes through in the 6th inning with a 3 run bomb to bring the score to 5-3 Choctaw.
Then in the 7th inning, with 2 outs, Ty Wilson hit a 3 run double to give the Pioneers the lead and they held on to win 6-5.
Carl Albert survives while Collinsville is dominant
Carl Albert came into the State Tournament as the favorite in 5A, but they had a tough draw in Sapulpa to start. The Chieftains were considered favorites along with Carl Albert to win the title during the season, but had stumbled a little and got swept by Tahlequah to end the season in 2nd place in their district.
It’s a good thing the Titans have OSU commit, Kash Ferris on their team because they needed him yesterday as Carl Albert edged Sapulpa, 1-0. Ferris was his usual dominant self as his line was CG 7 IP, 5 H, 9 K, BB.
Sapulpa’s Braxton Jones was just as good as he went 6 IP, 3 H, R, 0 ER, 6 K, BB.
Collinsville, on the other hand, had no problem handling Elgin in another highly anticipated game in the 5A bracket winning 9-0. JT Davis was outstanding as he went a complete game 7 IP, H, 13 K, 5 BB.
The Titans and Cardinals will meet today at 11:00.
Chickasha upsets Elk City in extras
This was one of the most anticipated matchups across all the classes as the Chicks had their ace, Layton Bryan, going for them against highly touted prospect, Kash Mayfield for Elk City.
Both of these pitchers lived up to their billings as Bryan went 7.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, ER, 8 K, 7 BB (he also went 2-4 at the plate) and Mayfield went 7 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 18 K!, and 3 BB.
In the 8th inning, the Chicks won on a dropped pop fly.
Pitching ruled the day
With the tournament beginning yesterday, it was obvious the teams sent out their aces to get that win and advance (I mean, there literally is no tomorrow if you lose, right?).
Along with the performances already mentioned above, here are some others worth mentioning.
- Nic Tolbert (Oktaha): CG 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2K, 0 BB
- Braylon Brooks (Tuttle): 6 IP, H, 0 R, 12 K, 5 BB
- Eli Buxton (Sand Springs): CG 7 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 8 K, 2 BB
- Kyler Zagar (Perry) (W): CG 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 K, 3 BB

- Blayd Harris (Marlow): CG 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 10 K, 3 BB (also went 3-4, 2 RBI)
- Parker Hayes (Mount St Mary): CG 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 8 K, 2 BB
- Jackson Farrell (Owasso): CG 7 IP, 3 H, R, 0 ER, 8 K, BB
- Brayden Northington (Tahlequah): CG 7 IP, H, 2 ER, 6 K, 2 BB
- Brisco Smith (Duncan): CG 7 IP, 2 H, R, 0 ER, 16 K!, 3 BB
