The calendar has turned to the a new school year and that means the OSSAA high school Fall baseball season will be here soon. The season officially gets underway on August 10, but teams can play games before then if both teams have already started school.
Up until that the beginning of the season, SSBR will be providing previews of as many teams as we can. Recently, SSBR sent out questionnaires to the high school coaches across the state of Oklahoma asking for their top returning players, top newcomers, overall strengths/weaknesses, and their overall assessment where their respective programs are coming into the 2026 Fall season.
What you have below are the responses to those questions in the words of the coaches themselves.
Today’s team: Mason Eagles
Classification: B
2025 Fall Results: 1-12
2026 Spring Results: 5-13
Head Coach: Clifton Sands
Head coaching experience: 1st Year
Top Returners
- Griffin Vansant is a sophomore utility player who can play virtually any position at a high level. A consistent offensive threat, Griffin finished the season with one of the team’s highest on-base percentage (OBP) and batting average (BA) marks, making him a key contributor both defensively and at the plate.
- Brodie Atwell is a senior pitcher and catcher who is a tough matchup for opposing hitters. When he’s locked in on the mound, his command and stuff make it extremely difficult for batters to make solid contact.
- Kane Putman is a senior utility player known for his positive attitude both on and off the field. As the season progressed, he developed into a major threat at the plate, consistently producing quality at-bats and becoming an important part of the team’s offense.
Top Newcomers
- Cayden Thomas – A sophomore utility player who made a strong impression during the summer season. Cayden consistently produced at the plate and showed tremendous potential on the mound, establishing himself as a valuable two-way player.
- Chisom McCurry – A freshman with a very bright future. We expect big things from Chisom this season as he has the ability to hit, defend, and play nearly every position on the field at a high level.
- Zadan Montgomery – A senior who joined the team late last season and quickly made an impact. Zadan covers a lot of ground in the outfield with his speed and has a knack for finding ways to get on base, making him a valuable contributor.
- Looking at Rowdy Vaughn and Max Hughes , to helping step up this season as well
Team strengths
I believe one of our biggest strengths is the chemistry this team has built over the years. Many of these players have been playing baseball together since their Little League days. We are a young team that gained valuable varsity experience last season, and we’re excited to build on that this year. With that experience, along with a talented freshman class coming off a very successful junior high season, we look forward to an exciting and competitive upcoming season.
Team needs to work on
I believe the areas we need to improve on are maintaining a positive attitude, continuing to develop our fundamental baseball skills, and becoming more consistent at the plate. If we can focus on those three areas, we’ll put ourselves in a great position to be successful this season.
Outlook
My outlook for this season is to finish with a .500 record or better. I expect our returning players to build on the experience they gained last season and continue to improve throughout the year. I also look for our freshman class to step up, make an immediate impact, and help us earn more wins than we did last season.
