It took longer than expected, but the Oklahoma Sooners won game 2 to sweep their Super Regional against Kansas.
After an hour and a half rain delay to get the game started, the Sooners wasted no time getting on the board. After a quick 1-2-3 inning by Xander Mercurius (OU was the designated home team), OU came to the plate. Jason Walk led off with a hustle double on a ground ball base hit up the middle. After reaching 3B and with Camden Johnson on 1B, Deiten Lachance knocked in Walk on a 6-4-3 double play.
The Jayhawks scored a run in the 2nd, but the Sooners answered in a big way in the bottom half. A total of 12 batters came to the plate for OU as they scored 6 runs to go up 7-1 after 2. Dasan Harris got the first RBI for OU as he beat the shift on a base hit. “CHAOUS” then ensued as Kyle Branch laid down a safety squeeze and reaching base on an error by the Jayhawk pitcher. Camden Johnson kept things going with an RBI walk on the KU relief pitcher. Lachance then knocked in RBIs 2 and 3 for the game on a base hit to LF. Brendan Brock wrapped up the scoring on a bases loaded HBP.
Mercurius kept the Jayhawks off the board in the 3rd before Dayton Tockey stayed hot with a lead off bomb. It is his 5th HR in the NCAA Tournament.
That is where we stood after the rain and more importantly, lightning entered the area delaying the game with Branch up at the plate with a 3-1 count with no outs.
After almost 2 hours, the game was suspended until Monday at noon.
When play resumed, Branch got the walk, but the Sooners couldn’t do anything else that inning. Mercurius pitched the 4th inning for OU going 1-2-3.
After a lead off walk to start the 5th, Skip Johnson went to the bullpen where he called upon Nate Smithburg who came in and got an immediate DP and another out to end the threat.
Smithburg kept the Jayhawks off the board until the 8th inning when he gave up a solo shot.
OU didn’t score again until the 6th inning when both Deiten Lachance and Dasan Harris had 2 run bombs each.
Trey Gambill added a solo bomb in the 8th to bring the score to 13-2 where that was how it ended.
OU is headed to the College World Series in Omaha for the 12th time in program history and their first trip since 2022 where they made it to the final best of 3 series finishing as National Runner Up.
