The calendar has turned to the a new year and that means the OSSAA high school baseball season will be here soon. Classes A1, A2, and B officially get started February 23 while the rest of the classes begin March 2.

Up until that the beginning of the season, SSBR will be providing previews of as many teams as we can. Recently, SSBR sent out questionnaires to the high school coaches across the state of Oklahoma asking for their top returning players, top newcomers, overall strengths/weaknesses, and their overall assessment where their respective programs are coming into the 2026 season.

What you have below are the responses to those questions in the words of the coaches themselves.

Today’s team: Sallisaw Black Diamonds

Classification: 4A

2025 Spring Results: 25-7 (State quarterfinalist)

Head Coach: Curt Wartchow

Head coaching experience: 14 years (5 at Sallisaw)

Top Returners

  • Luke Pack– Sr that is the top of our lineup and the key to our offense.
  • Easton Wolfe – District starter on the mound and a jack of all trades on defense playing both infield and outfield last year.
  • Kase Adams– plays a great 3rd base hopefully he plays a big part n the mound.
  • Dagan Grizzle – Big arm on the mound and big bat in the middle of the lineup.
  • Rylan Eagle – Big part on the mound last season and a good bat from the left side of the plate.
  • Johnny Velasquez – Adds a lot of flexibility in our rotation by playing multiple positions.
  • Levi Scavo – Our middle reliever

Top Newcomers

  • Logan Bethel – Moved back tho Sallisaw he will help fill holes in our outfield left by graduation.
  • Landon Clawson – He has waited his turn and will take over behind the plate.

Overall Team Strengths

The team depth should be our strength. Carson Sharp , Zane McKinney, Keaton Brant , Mathew McGrew, and Brodi Nickell all looking for their spot in the lineup. We also have a great Freshman class that could help at the end of the year.

Overall Team Needs to Work On

Getting our pitching rotation set will be our biggest challenge. We will need some of our young kids to step into roles.

Outlook

Looking for another run at the State tournament in the 4A meat grinder.
