The calendar has turned to the a new year and that means the OSSAA high school baseball season will be here soon. Classes A1, A2, and B officially get started February 23 while the rest of the classes begin March 2.
Up until that the beginning of the season, SSBR will be providing previews of as many teams as we can. Recently, SSBR sent out questionnaires to the high school coaches across the state of Oklahoma asking for their top returning players, top newcomers, overall strengths/weaknesses, and their overall assessment where their respective programs are coming into the 2026 season.
What you have below are the responses to those questions in the words of the coaches themselves.
Today’s team: Elk City Elks
Classification: 4A
2025 Results: 26-5 (State quarterfinalist)
Head Coach: Jay McClure
Head coaching experience: 5 years (all at Elk City)
Top Returners
- Jaxon McArthur – Catcher, Signed with Barton Community College. Jaxon is a three year starter. Very athletic behind the plate, he will hit lead off for us. Jaxon is one of the hardest working kids I have ever coaches. We expect big things from Jaxon this season.
- Krew Keyes – 2B. Krew stepped in a sophomore last season and had a great season. He was one of our best defensive players last season. We look for Krew to make another big jump as a Junior this season. Krew will be one of our top arms this season.
Top Newcomers
- Wyatt Taliaferro – Wyatt will play on the infield for us this season, very athletic with the ability to play multiple positions.
- Brent Murphy – Signed with Central Kansas Christian College. With his work ethic Brent has given himself the chance to become a college baseball player. We expect Brent to be one of our leaders this season.
- Nate Miller – Nate will hit in the middle of our line up, he has the ability to be a power hitter in our line up this season. He is a hard working young man, we expect him to give us a little pop in the line up.
Overall Team Strengths
Defensively we will be strong at every position. This will be one of the most athletic teams we have had.
Overall Team Needs to Work On
Just getting more experience, we will be young. We want to go play the best teams we can, and get experience playing against the top teams in Oklahoma.
Outlook
We will have a very talented team, but a young team. We have the chance to be as good as any team we have had the past few years. Our guys have worked hard in the off season, to give themselves a chance to have a great year.
