It is the 2nd weekend in October and that means it is State Tournament time for Fall baseball in Oklahoma.
Teams from across 3 classifications have been battling it out since the week of August 11 through the 7 week regular season, then to Districts for Classes A and B, then Regionals last week for all 3 classes.
The final 8 from each class will meet at various locations throughout the OKC metro on Friday and Saturday with the final 2 in each class facing off for the state championship at Bricktown Ballpark on Saturday.
Let’s take a look at the final 8 teams in Class B.
We will also keep score of each game on this post and use it as our scoreboard for the Class 2A State Tournament.
Ft Cobb-Broxton Mustangs (21-12)
- Fall State Tournament Appearances: 18
- Fall State Championships: 4 (Last 2024)
- All Time Fall State Tournament Record: 27-13
- Last Fall State Tournament Appearance: 2024 (State Champ)
The Mustangs come into the Class B State Tournament as the top team according to the coaches.
Do not let the record fool you. FCB only played 7 games against Class B competition with the majority of those games in Districts and Regionals. The Mustangs went a perfect 7-0 against Class B including wins over fellow State teams Calumet, Leedey, and Mill Creek in the Regionals.
The Mustangs may not have been as dominant as they’ve been the last couple of seasons, but they still held their own against teams in 2A and A going 16-12. Wins over other classes State teams include Navajo (2x), Colbert, Canute, Wister, Wright City, and Arapaho-Butler.
The Mustangs have won the last 6 State Championships combined (Fall and Spring) in Class B. They are coached by Dale Bellamy who is in his 13th year in Ft Cobb.
Calumet Chieftains (19-8)
- Fall State Tournament Appearances: 5
- All Time Fall State Tournament Record: 5-5
- Last Fall State Tournament Appearance: 2024 (Semifinalist)
Calumet comes in as the 2 seed according to the OSSAA Coaches Poll and they are the #5 team in our SSBR Elite Eight.
The Chieftains also played a tough schedule this year so their 19-8 record may not necessarily show how good they are compared to the rest of the Class. Calumet does have an 8-1 record over Class B with that one loss to Ft Cobb-Broxton in their lone game against each other. They do have wins over fellow Class B state teams Hammon and Tupelo in the Regionals.
Calumet also gave Silo one of their 2 losses on the season and they have wins over other classes state teams in Latta and Canute.
The question is will this be the year that Calumet gets over the hump known as Ft Cobb-Broxton (assuming they meet in the championship game)? The Mustangs have knocked Calumet out of the State Tournament in the last 5 combined tournament with the last 4 all in the championship game.
Cody Thiessen is in his 4th year at Calumet.
Staurt Hornets (21-10)
- Fall State Tournament Appearances: 8
- All Time Fall State Tournament Record: 6-7
- Last Fall State Tournament Appearance: 2024 (Semifinalist)
Coming in as the 3 seed, Stuart has much the same story as the top 2 seeds. The record may not reflect just how good the Hornets are compared to the rest of the Class. Over half of the Hornets’ games have come against teams in Class 2A and A with several against top teams from those classes.
After starting the season 1-4 after 5 games (with losses to Calera, Tupelo, Dale, and Silo), the Hornets went 20-6 the rest of the way. They have played only one game against fellow Class B State teams (a loss to Tupelo in the 2nd game of the season), but they have wins over other Class State teams Wright City and Tushka.
Head coach Josh Williams is in his 3rd year at Stuart and has guided the Hornets to the state tournament in 5 of his 6 seasons (Fall and Spring) since arriving.
Leedey Bison (25-8)
- Fall State Appearances: 40
- Fall State Championships: 3 (2015, 2014, 1989)
- All Time Fall State Tournament Record: 46-37
- Last Fall State Tournament Appearance: 2024 (0-1)
Leedey comes in as the 4 seed after an impressive run against Class B teams this season. The Bison went 16-3 in their games vs Class B competition with their losses to Ft Cobb-Broxton and Hammon twice (Leedey did beat Hammon the other time they played).
Leedey has a win over Class B State team Dover as well as wins over other Class State teams Arapaho-Butler (2x) and Navajo.
Head coach Brandon Goldston is in his 4th season in Leedey.
Hammon Warriors (22-7)
- Fall State Appearances: 12
- All Time Fall State Tournament Record: 6-12
- Last Fall State Tournament Appearance: 2024 (Semifinalist)
After starting the season 4-3 after 7 games, the Warriors righted the ship and won 18 of their next 22 games to finish strong.
The Warriors showed grit throughout the season and it was on display in the Regionals. After losing their opener to Battiest, 19-1, the Warriors won their next 2 games against Coleman, 5-1, and Battiest, 15-9, to make it to the state tournament.
Hammon has played 5 games against Class B State teams going 2-3. They’ve also beat other State teams from other class Arapaho-Butler.
Hammon was the Regional Runner Up at the Leedey Regional and per OSSAA rules, they cannot play Leedey until the finals. That is why they are paired up against the 3 seed, Stuart, in the first round.
Brady Holland is in his 4th year at Hammon.
Dover Longhorns (22-8)
- Fall State Appearances: 16
- Fall State Championships: 1 (2005)
- All Time Fall State Tournament Record: 13-14
- Last Fall State Tournament Appearance: 2010
It has been a long time coming, but head coach, Pete Voth, has the Longhorns back in the Fall State Tournament for the first time in 15 years.
The Longhorns have a 16-2 record vs Class B competition losing only to Leedey in the first game of the season and Moss in the Regionals which they avenged to qualify to state. Dover does have an early season win over Hammon as that is the only over Class B State team they’ve played.
Dover has played only 2 other state teams from other classes losing to Canute and Okarche late in the season.
Mill Creek Bullfrogs (21-7)
- Fall State Appearances: 1st
- All Time Fall State Tournament Record: N/A
- Last Fall State Tournament Appearance: N/A
Mill Creek is the newcomer to the party making their first ever state tournament appearance.
In his 5th year at the helm, Nolan Henry has done a tremendous job building the Bullfrog program to the this point.
Mill Creek won their first 11 games of the season which was the most of any program in state this season. While the Bullfrogs played only 1 game against Class B State teams (at 7-4 loss to Ft Cobb-Broxton in the Regionals), they did go 19-5 against the other teams in the class.
Mill Creek did beat 9th ranked Varnum twice in the Regional to advance to the State Tournament.
Tupelo Tigers (13-15)
- Fall State Appearances: 26
- Fall State Championships: 2 (2007, 1966)
- All Time Fall State Tournament Record: 17-24
- Last Fall State Tournament Appearance: 2023 (Semifinalist)
On the other end of the spectrum from Mill Creek, Tupelo is making their 26th appearance in the Fall State Tournament.
We’ve talked about not being deceived by certain teams records, but no team epitomizes that more than Tupelo. The Tigers have played more than half of their games against teams from Class 2A and A. Their record vs Class B teams is 11-2. The Tigers’ losses in Class B have come to Moss and Calumet (which was in the Regional). Tupelo qualified as the Regional Runner Up in Calumet sandwiching a pair of run rule wins over Asher to that Calumet loss.
Tupelo also has a win over Stuart who is in the Class B State Tournament.
Dustin Romines is in his first season leading the Tigers’ program.
