The weekly SSBR Fall Elite Eight is sponsored this season by our partner, Conner Darnell Designs. If you have a need for a graphic designer, photographer, or sports media, give Conner a look at his website: connerdarnelldesigns.com.
Here at SSBR we try to have fun with what we do. We cover a sport that is supposed to be fun and we want to convey that in our content.
One of the ways we do it is by doing our version of a ranking system. We take all the teams regardless of classification and do our best to rank them on how they are doing relative to their class.
*In the Spring we have the caveat that says we are not ranking them on a “head to head” basis. In the Fall since teams may play each other regardless of class more regularly, “head to head” is more of a factor.
We also do our rankings based on results more than what we think who would necessarily win a game. If a spot comes down to two teams, if they’ve played head to head the result of that game weighs heavily in that decision. (The first week’s rankings, however, do have what a team’s expectations for the season factored in, but as the season goes along it will be the results that matter.)
In the Spring we do a “Sweet Sixteen. In the Fall we do an “Elite Eight.” because there aren’t as many teams as the Spring, but six is too little for the Fall
As always, this is for fun so please treat it as such.

1. Dale Pirates (2A), 18-3
Previous ranking: 1
Last week: 3-0
Dale comes in at the top spot for the 3rd straight week.
Winners of 19 straight, the Pirates beat Varnum (10-0) and Oktaha (8-0) on Monday and Tuesday before run ruling #7 Byng, 11-3 on Thursday.
This week: Mon vs Ripley; Thurs: Regionals vs Santa Fe South
2. Preston Pirates (2A), 25-1
Previous ranking: 2
Last week: 3-0
Preston keeps rolling along. They have the current and longest winning streak of the season at 23. Last week they beat Moss, 9-1, Riverside, 8-0, and OCA 5-1.
This week: Thurs: Regionals vs The Academy
3. Okarche Warriors (A), 24-2
Previous ranking: 3
Last week: 3-0
Okarche is clearly the favorite in Class A at this point and they didn’t even have to play a District opponent to do so. Indianola forfeited to the Warriors.
Because of that, the Warriors scheduled 2 games against 2A opponents on Thursday and Friday. They beat Vanoss, 10-0, and then #8 Calera, 5-2 respectively after defeating Ft Cobb-Broxton 11-8 on a walk off grand slam by Brett Carnott on Monday.
This week: Thurs-Sat Regional Tournament (8 Union City, 9 Wister, 16 Sterling)
4. Silo Rebels (2A), 22-2
Previous ranking: 4
Last week: 2-0
We’ve talked extensively this season about how good the pitching is for Silo. It is time we start to notice what the Rebels are doing at the plate. In their last 9 games, the Rebels are averaging over 7 runs per game. Silo seems to be finding their stride and should be considered one of the big favorites in Class 2A.
This week: Mon vs Tupelo; Thurs: Regionals vs Riverside
5. Calumet Chieftains (B), 13-7
Previous ranking: 5
Last week: 3-1
Calumet stays at #5 for the 2nd straight week after reentering the Elite Eight last week.
The Chieftains did lose to #4 Silo at Seminole State last Tuesday, but they showed their dominance over Class B teams going 3-0 in Districts by a combined score of 33-5.
This week: Mon at AmPo; Thurs-Sat Regional Tournament (7 Asher, 10 Tupelo, 16 Kiowa)
6. Calera Bulldogs (2A), 19-7
Previous ranking: 8
Last week: 1-1
It’s not often that a team goes 1-1 in a week, but moves up 2 spots. That is a product of the Bulldogs’ overall schedule and 11-3 record in the month of September. Calera beat Class A Regional Host, Rattan, 4-0 on Tuesday before going on the road in a last minute scheduled game at #3 Okarche. The Bulldogs held a 2 run lead in that game before ultimately losing 5-2 to the Warriors.
This week: Thurs: Regionals vs Howe
7. Byng Pirates (2A), 14-7
Previous ranking: 6
Last week: 2-1
Byng stays at #7 after going 2-1 last week. They beat Roff, 12-0, and Oktaha, 4-3 sandwiched around a run rule loss (11-3) to #1 Dale on Tuesday.
Byng is limping into the postseason as they’ve lost 7 of their last 9 games. However, as we’ve said before, Byng is extremely talented and is still a factor in the 2A state championship race.
This week: Mon vs Coleman; Thurs: Regionals vs Vanoss
8. Canute Trojans (A), 24-7
Previous ranking: 6
Last week: 2-1
Canute had a chance to really cement themselves as the 2nd best team last week in a game vs Arapaho-Butler. The Trojans allowed 4 unanswered runs to the Indians to lose, 6-5, in extras. Canute is still the 2nd best team in Class A, but the gap to the others may be closer than thought.
The Trojans still get the nod for the Elite Eight based on their overall record and strength of schedule. September wins include Oktaha, Dover, Byng, Calumet, and 2 against Navajo.
This week: Mon vs Leedey; Thurs-Sat Regional Tournament (7 Wright City, 10 Ripley, 15 Verden)
