It is hard to believe, but this Fall season is now past the halfway mark of the regular season. There are seven weeks in the regular season and this week marks the 5th week of it.

As the 2nd half of the season starts, we are starting to see who the top teams are and which teams are batting to get there.

This week’s SSBR Games of the Week reflect that as we have:

  • A SSBR Elite Eight matchup
  • A couple of rivalry games
  • A matchup of top teams in the same class
  • A matchup of teams looking to host a regional

*Home teams are listed first

All rankings are from the latest SSBR Elite Eight

#4 Byng Pirates (2A, 9-2) vs #6 Colbert Leopards (2A, 11-4), Monday, September 8

Byng is coming off their 2nd loss of the year. They suffered a 5-0 shutout loss at Latta in another SSBR Game of the Week last Friday. Regardless of that loss (Latta is pretty good), the Pirates are still one of the top teams in the state and will be looking to get back on track.

Colbert is coming off a 2-0 week and are winners of 4 straight. The Leopards have been on the cusp of being a top 4 team in the loaded 2A class and a win at Byng would go a long way in putting them in that conversation. The Leopards are also looking to avenge a 10-4 loss to Byng in the Roff Tournament 2 weeks ago.

Wright City Lumberjax (A, 9-6) vs #5 Silo Rebels (2A, 11-2), Tuesday, September 9

It is fair to say that the Lumberjax have had a roller coaster season so far. The defending Class A State Champs have a win against the previous mentioned Colbert Leopards, but they’ve also had some head scratchers including a shutout loss to Union City in the Varnum Tournament. A win against an elite team like Silo could go a long way in the confidence department down the stretch.

Silo is one of, if not the best, pitching teams in the state regardless of class. The “issue” with the Rebels is their bats are inconsistent. While the Rebels have not given up more than 2 runs only 3 times in their 13 games including 7 shutouts, their 2 losses came against Latta (2-1) and Calumet (3-0)

These 2 teams met earlier this season with Silo winning 4-0.

Ft Cobb-Broxton Mustangs (B, 11-7) vs Calumet Chieftains (B, 8-5), Tuesday, September 9

Don’t let the record fool you. These 2 teams are still 2 of the best in Class B and both should have a say in the state championship race. Both of these teams have largely played their games against Class A and Class 2A foes and they are a perfect in their games against Class B competition (3-0).

While we have Stuart as the only Class B representative in the SSBR Elite Eight, the coaches still believe FCB and Calumet are the top 2 teams in the coaches poll. Add the fact that Ft Cobb-Broxton has beaten Calumet in the last 4 State Championships (Fall and Spring), while Calumet has gottent the better of the Mustangs a couple of time in the regular season, this has all the makings of a great game.

Asher Indians (B, 7-7) vs Mill Creek Bullfrogs (B, 14-2), Thursday, September 11

Looking at the record of these two teams, you might think this game isn’t worthy of a GOTW status. However, this game could go a long way in determining if either team will be hosting a potential regional.

Asher comes into the week with a .500 record. However, 3 of those losses came against 2A teams – Latta, Silo, Dale. The Indians are 5-3 against Class B competition with 2 of those losses against Stuart. The coaches still think highly of Asher as they are ranked #8 in last week’s poll.

Mill Creek comes into this week tied with Canute for the 3rd most wins in the state behind Preston and Okarche. The Bullfrogs have played all but 2 of their games against Class B teams where they’ve feasted.

The coaches have Mill Creek at #5 in last week’s coaches poll.

These 2 teams played each other in the Caney Tournament 2 weeks ago where Asher handed Mill Creek their first loss of the season, 6-2.

Rattan Rams (A, 7-5) vs #7 Stuart Hornets (B, 13-5)

Rattan’s season has been more of a roller coaster than anyone’s at this point. Starting off with a 2-4 record after 6 games, the Rams had won 5 in a row before a disappointing loss to Battiest in their last outing. Rattan has seemed to not been able to find their footing for a long stretch thay we’ve been accustomed to the last few years. A win vs Stuart would go a long way in the confidence department.

Stuart has been one of the best teams in the state after week 1. After a 1-4 start, the Hornets have gone 12-1 since winning 2 tournaments in the process. Entering the SSBR Elite Eight this week at #7, a win at Rattan would be a nice “signature” win to solidify that ranking.
