Here we are. The start of the 2025 OSSAA Fall Baseball season is upon us.

Some teams have already played some games beginning last Thursday since they had already started school, but the official start of the season for everyone is Monday.

We here at SSBR is try to bring attention to as many teams and players as we can. One of the ways we do that is highlighting five games of the upcoming week that we will focus on – the SSBR Games of the Week.

Each week we will pick five games that are NOT scheduled to be played in tournaments later in the week (we will provide separate coverage for several tournaments this Fall). We try to find games that are of top teams, have compelling storylines, and even some teams that may not get as much attention as others.

Below are the five SSBR Games of the Week for Week 1.

(Teams listed first are the home team.)

Tushka vs Colbert (Monday, August 11, 4:30 p.m.)

This is a matchup of two teams that met each other in the Spring 2A-2 State semifinals. Tushka won that game, 10-1, on their way to winning the state championship.

Colbert is entering their 2nd year under head coach, Zach Crabtree, and are looking to ride the momentum of their turn around seasons last year. For a look at our preview of the Leopards, click here.

Tushka enters this Fall after finally winning a state title last Spring after several consecutive state tournament appearances. The Tigers lost two of their top players from last year, Shooter Boatright and Walt Kerr, but they return a lot of experience.

Tushka already played 2 games last week going 1-1, losing to Wright City and beating Battiest.

Okarche vs Canute (Monday, August 11, 4:30 p.m.)

Right out of the gate, we have what could very well be a preview of the Class A State Championship game. Both teams return perhaps the most talent and experience of any team in Class A and expectations for both teams are extremely high.

Okarche is riding a wave of four consecutive state tournament appearances including two semifinal appearances last year. The Warriors return almost all of the core that has made those four state tournament appearances and it’ll be hard to find a pitching staff better than Okarche’s.

Canute is coming off a Class A-2 State Championship in the Spring and return just as much experience as anyone. The Trojans return eight full time starters including one of the top players in the state at any class, Jake Buetler.

Coach Bobby Blackburn is in his 3rd year at Canute and while the Trojans have made the Spring state tournament twice, they have yet to make the Fall state tournament.

Calera vs Wister (Monday, August 11, 4:30 p.m.)

This is a matchup of two of the top programs over the last several years.

Calera made the Fall state tournament last Fall and has made the Spring state tournament the four out of the last five seasons. After being ranked in the top 2 of Class 2A-1 for most of the season, the Bulldogs were state semifinalists in the Spring winning over 30 games.

Calera comes into the game already 1-0 beating Stuart on Thursday.

For their part, Wister has made the state tournament a total of 37 times combined between the Fall and Spring. They’ve made the last six state tournaments (Fall and Spring combined). Last Fall they lost to Wright City in the semifinals and were runners up to Wright City in the Spring.

Dale vs Stuart (Tuesday, August 12, 4:30 p.m.)

There is no reason to go over the history of Dale. They’ve been to too many state tournaments to count and they are consistently one of the top teams in Class 2A.

What has changed for the Pirates this season is they are under a 3rd different head coach in the last 4 years. Cody Merrell moves over from Norman High School to take over the Pirates program.

The cupboard isn’t bare for Merrell as he has several players returning who played in some big time games already for the Pirates. Dale has also been more than impressive in the scrimmage “season” putting up football like scores.

Stuart comes into the Fall as one of the top teams in Class B. The Hornets have been to the last four Class B state tournaments (Fall and Spring) making the semifinals three times. Unfortunately for the Hornets, they’ve lost to either Ft Cobb-Broxton or Calumet all four tournaments.

Stuart has already started their season losing both games to Calera and Tupelo.

Silo vs Wright City (Friday, August 15, 5:00 p.m.)

Talk about a heavyweight fight. This game features two teams who won their respective Class’ state championship last Fall with the Lumberjax winning in the Spring as well.

Silo is in their 3rd year under head coach, Eddie Jeffcoat. The Rebels were the dominant team in Class 2A last Fall and made the Class 3A semifinals in the Spring before losing to eventual champion, Washington. Silo returns several players from last year and look to be the favorite in Class 2A this Fall.

Silo is already 1-0 on the season beating Battiest, 12-2, last Thursday.

After several trips to the state tournament, Wright City broke through the glass ceiling in 2024-2025 winning both the Fall and Spring state championships. The Jax went a combined 64-5 last Fall and Spring combined and finished as our SSBR Fall Elite Eight champs and 3rd in our SSBR Spring Sweet Sixteen.

The Jax did lose some of their top players to graduation, but head coach, Kyle Butler, has it going in Southeast Oklahoma where they now reload instead of rebuild.

Wright City is already 1-0 on the season beating Tushka, 11-3.
