The Summer break is almost over and schools in Oklahoma will begin the 2025-2026 school soon. That also means that it is almost time for the 2025 High School Fall season to start.

The season officially opens on Monday, August 11 (or sooner if both schools are already in session). For the next few weeks, we will be previewing several teams as they look forward to the season.

Recently, SSBR sent out questionnaires to the head coaches of the schools playing baseball this Fall. We asked about their returning players, top players, strengths/weaknesses, and their overall assessment of where their teams are and could be.

Today’s team: Calumet Chieftains

Classification: B

Fall 2024 Results: 28-5 (State Runner Up)

Spring 2025 Results: 18-10 (State Runner Up)

Head Coach: Cody Thiessen

Head coaching experience: 9 years (3 at Calumet)

Top Returning Players

  • Kaleb Thiessen: .433 AVG, 5 HR, 21 RBI, 7 2B, 2 3B, 22 SB
  • Kingston Arnold: .362, HR, 32 RBI, 5 2B, 3B, 13 SB
  • Brendon Voss: DNP in Spring due to injury

Top Newcomers

*Not necessarily new players, but they are stepping into a more everyday role

  • Talon Arnold, SO: High average hitter that plays middle INF and big part of young pitching staff
  • Konnor Thiessen, SO: Middle of the lineup bat with power and average; pitches as well
  • Wyatt Cox: Made huge jumps at the end of last year and will be relied upon as a run producer; pitches as well

Outlook

Let’s get this out of the way. Calumet has been the best team in Class B the last 2 seasons except for one other team: Ft Cobb-Broxton. The Chieftains have 4 straight Fall/Spring State runners up as they’ve lost to FCB all 4 of those times. But while head coach, Cody Thiessen, says, “It’s time to win one,” as well as he “felt like last year we had a great team that beat most of the state champions at one time or another,” he also says, “FCB may have been the best team from 3A down, so falling short to them is nothing new to hand our heads over.”

Yes, there will be a few adjustments needed to be made due to the loss of a few seniors, but if a program is built for it it is Calumet. The Chieftains are young, but several of those players have seen big spots and have tons of postseason experience. Coach Thiessen stresses that they “will have to be ready to throw strikes and play defense as there will be players playing new roles this year.”

With the returning experience and talent in Kaleb Thiessen (who was on Team Oklahoma at the National High School Baseball Championship in Omaha this summer) and Kingston Arnold, along with getting back Brendon Voss, expect Calumet to make another deep run again this season. The Chieftains are as primed as any other team to be standing tall when the dust settles in a wide open Class B.
