The Wednesday after the MLB All Star game is proverbially the slowest sports day of the year. No MLB baseball; The Open Championship in golf doesn’t start until Thursday; training camp for the NFL starts later in July along with NCAA football not starting until August; the NBA tries to shove the Summer League down our throats but no one cares. It is just a bad day for sports.

What a better time to check and see how our guys are doing up to this point of the season in the Majors? That is what we are going to do here. We will take a look at every player that is currently on a MLB roster with Oklahoma ties and those who have spent time in the “bigs.”

American League East

Jackson Holliday, Baltimore Orioles (Stillwater High School)

After his 2nd call up to the Orioles in 2024, Holliday has entrenched himself as the Orioles’ everyday 2nd baseman. He has played in 88 of the Orioles’ 95 games and was an All Star finalist for 2B in the American League.

Ramon Laureano, Baltimore Orioles (Northeastern A&M)

Laureano looked like he was on his way out of the league not too long ago, but after a good stint with Atlanta in 2024, Laureano signed a free agent deal with the Orioles in February.

Laureano went on the IL on May 24 and came off of it June 6. He has had a good season so far in Baltimore.

Tim Hill, New York Yankees (Bacone College)

Hill will always have a special place in Oklahoma baseball lore as he comes from a college that no longer exists.

Hill found himself out of a job in the middle of the season in 2024 when the Yankees took a flyer on the lefty bullpen arm. He did not disappoint.

Hill has found himself a home in the Bronx as an effective arm out of the bullpen for the Yankees.

American League Central

Jackson Jobe, Detroit Tigers (Heritage Hall School)

Jobe came into the 2025 campaign as the #1 rated prospect after spending the 2024 postseason (and pitching) on the Tigers’ roster.

Jobe was having a solid first full year getting 10 starts to his credit before going down with a grade 1 flexor strain on May 30. It was expected that Jobe will be out until the All Star break or mid July, but the Tigers announced in June that Jobe would be having Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the season.

Jonah Bride, Minnesota Twins (Owasso High School)

Bride spent parts of the last 3 seasons before 2025 with Oakland and Miami as back up 3B/UTL. He saw his most action in the bigs in 2024 when he played in 71 games.

After a slow start to the 2025 season, Miami designated Bride for assignment and eventually traded him to the Twins for cash.

Since his arrival in Minnesota, Bride had improved his season’s stats but not enough. On July 1 the Twins designated Bride for assignment ultimately outrighting him to (AAA) St Paul where he is currently.

Carson McCusker, Minnesota Twins (Oklahoma State)

After being drafted in 2017 by the Brewers, McCusker finally debuted in the Majors with Minnesota on May 18. He saw action in 5 games before being sent back to AAA, St Paul.

American League West

Brady Basso, Athletics (Oklahoma State)

The Oklahoma State alum made his MLB debut in 2024 with the A’s pitching in 7 games in the bigs bouncing from AAA to the Majors.

Basso has started the year on the IL and was sent on a rehab assignment on June 8. He has appeared in 3 games at Stockton and Las Vegas

Jon Gray, Texas Rangers (Chandler HS, Eastern OK State, University of Oklahoma)

The former #3 overall pick of the Colorado Rockies in 2013 has had a long career in the Majors. He pitched 9 games in 2015 and has been in the Majors since 2016. He signed a 4 year deal with Texas before the 2022 season and helped them win the World Series in 2023.

Unfortunately, Gray took a come backer in Spring Training and broke his wrist. Gray started the rehab assignment process on July 9 as the Rangers assigned him to (AAA) Round Rock then to their ACL team on July 14.

National League East

Julian Merryweather, New York Mets (Oklahoma Baptist University)

Merryweather is the newest addition to the NL East on our list as he was just signed to a free agent minor league deal with the Mets. He had spent the year with the Chicago Cubs, but the Cubs DFA’d Merryweather and outright released him in late May.

The Mets assigned Merryweater to (AAA) Syracuse on June 17 where he is still pitching.

JT Realmuto, Philadelphia Phillies (Carl Albert High School)

Realmuto has been one of the best catchers in all of baseball for several years now. He is a 3X All Star, won 2 Gold Gloves, and won 3 Silver Sluggers to go along with 2 All MLB 1st Team awards.

Realmuto started slow this season like most of the Phillies, but like the team he has picked it up lately and putting up numbers recently that are more in line with his career averages.

Jordan Romano, Philadelphia Phillies (Connors State College, Oral Roberts)

Romano was one of the best closers in baseball not too long ago. With Toronto, he had a combined 95 saves in 2021-2023 and he was an All Star in ’22 and ’23.

However, in 2024 when his production dipped along with injuries, and he lost his closer role with the Blue Jays. He signed as a free agent with Philadelphia in December, but he hasn’t found the form he once had in Toronto.

Jake Irvin, Washington Nationals (Univ of Oklahoma)

The former Sooners made his MLB debut in 2023 and has been a fixture in the Nationals rotation ever since. A solid middle of the rotation starter, Irvin is putting together another solid year so far as a workhorse in the Nationals rotation.

National League Central

Cade Horton, Chicago Cubs (Norman High School, Univ of Oklahoma)

Horton was taken with the 7th overall pick by the Cubs in 2022. He had a stellar minor league campaign in 2023 jumping 3 levels up to AA. In 2024, he started the season at (AAA) Iowa before missing the 2nd half of the season with a labrum issue.

Horton started hot in 2025 and the expectations were for Horton to be called up later in the season. Due to injuries in the Cubs rotation, those expectations were expedited as Horton made his MLB debut on May 10 against the New York Mets.

In his time in the bigs, Horton looks every bit the part as a MLB starter.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Cincinnati Reds (Oklahoma State)

“CES” has played parts of 3 seasons with the Reds in 2023-2025. He started the season with the Reds before going on the IL on April 17 with low back inflammation.

He came off the IL on June 6 and had the Reds’ first walk off hit of the season. Since then, however, CES has struggled and the Reds optioned him to (AAA) Louisville on July 12.

Jose Trevino, Cincinnati Reds (Oral Roberts)

The long time #2 catcher at Texas then New York (Yankees) is finally getting a chance to be the main backstop for a club. The Yankees traded Trevino to the Reds this past December then the Reds signed Trevino to an extenstion.

Trevino has repaid the Reds as he is playing regularly and having his best statistical season of his career so far.

Andrew Heaney, Pittsburgh Pirates (Putnam City High School, Oklahoma State)

The Pirates alum has been in the big leagues for parts of the last 12 seasons. Riddled with injuries throughout his career, Heaney spent the last 2 seasons with the Rangers before signing as a free agent with Pittsburgh this past offseason.

After getting off to a solid start, Heaney has struggled recently. In his last 7 games, he is 1-4 with a 7.11 ERA.

G 19/GS 18, 4-8, 4.59 ERA, 98 IP, 90 H, 50 R, 50 ER, 33 BB, 73 SO

Ryan Helsley, St Louis Cardinals (Sequoyah Tahlequah HS, Northeastern State University)

Helsley has been regarded one of the best closers in baseball, but he took it to another level in 2024. He had 49 saves for the Redbirds and a 2.04 ERA. He earned his 2nd All Star bid as well.

He’s off to another good start in 2025 as he already has the 2nd most saves in a season of his career.

National League West

Justin Wrobleski, Los Angeles Dodgers (Oklahoma State)

Wrobleski is in a tough spot in the Dodgers’ organization. With their rotation loaded with known superstars (Kershaw, Glasnow, Suzuki, Yamamoto, May, Ohtani, etc) it is hard for Wrobleski to crack that rotation.

What he is doing is providing a solid option for the Dodges to call him up for a spot start when needed with the injuries that the Dodgers are having right now.

Wrobleski recently spent a month with LA before being optioned back to OKC on July 7.

G 8/GS 2, 4-3, 4.50 ERA, 40 IP, 38 H, 22 R, 20 ER, 10 BB, 40 SO

Spencer Bivens, San Francisco Giants (Rogers State)

Bivens is the 2nd D2 guy from the state currently in the Majors. After being back and forth between SF and AAA, he was called up to the Giants in August of last year and has stayed in their bullpen ever since.

Bivens has turned into a solid option for the Giants when going to the bullpen.
