The 2025 season is here and so are the weekly SSBR awards. Last year we began bringing attention to individual performances turned in by those on small college (NCAA D2, NAIA, NCCAA) teams and junior colleges.

Each week we send out nomination forms to the head coaches of each team in the various divisions above. We ask them to nominate only 1 position player and 1 pitcher with their stats for the week and any context they feel would help their player. We look at those nominations and choose the player or pitcher in each category that we feel had the best week. Also, each player or pitcher nominated will get recognized even if they don’t win.

This week was a little different as the weather caused havoc on the schedule. Teams played less games or no games at all so the sample sizes were smaller. Also, several weekend series weren’t completed until Monday, so we pushed back the award a day as well.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the winners for Week 12.

Small College

Player of the Week

Christian Martinez, USAO Drovers

The Drovers’ regular season is over as the opening round of the SAC Tournament starts this week. USAO needed to win their series to lock up the #3 seed in the tournament and they dominated Texas Wesleyan sweeping them.

A big reason for that sweep was Christian Martinez and his play at the plate. Anchoring the middle of the lineup for the Drovers, Martinez did what he’s done all year and provided the big hits when needed.

Martinez’ line: G 3, .467/.563/.733 (1.299 OPS), HR, 3 RBI, 2B, 2 BB, 2R

Pitcher of the Week

Tyson Noel, USAO Drovers

Needing a win to secure the sweep over TWU and the #3 in the SAC Tournament, the Drovers handed the ball to Noel for the start. The Aussie has had his ups and downs this season, but Noel turned in what was probably his best start of the season considering the circumstances.

Noel provided the innings needed and kept the Rams at bay allowing the Drovers to go on an win.

Noel’s line: G 1/GS 1, 1-0, 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, BB, 5 K

Junior College

Player of the Week

Kip Christian, Carl Albert State Vikings

Christian has had himself a great 2nd half of the season and has been the Vikings’ most consistent hitter in that time frame. The Oktaha grad had another great week for the Vikings this week in picking up his 2nd SSBR Player of the Week award.

Christian’s line: G 4, .450/.542/1.000 (1.542 OPS), 3 HR, 10 RBI, 2 2B, 3 BB, HBP, 6 R

Other nominees:
– Carson Dunham, Redlands CC

Pitcher of the Week

Kash Thorne, Redlands CC

Redlands won their 25th game of the season this past weekend. That’s the most for the program since the 2014 season. A big reason for that is the overall improved pitching for the Cougars.

Kash Thorne has improved from a rough 2024 campaign and he showed that again this past week coming out of the bullpen leading the Cougars to that 25th win.

Thompson’s line: G 1/GS 0, 1-0, 4.1 IP, 2 H, ER, 8 K

Other nominees:
– Madden Dillard, Carl Albert State
