When Sooner State Baseball Report started in 2023, one of the things we did was try to evaluate who the best high school team in the state is relative to their level of play. We did that by creating the SSBR Dominant Dozen.

We take a look at who each team’s performance and the level of competition they have played. As the season goes on, head to head competition will obviously become more of a factor as well.

For example, are we saying that teams at the lower classes are better than say the top 6A teams? Maybe, maybe not. Most of the top upper teams have more depth than the lower class teams and they would most likely win a series with them. But relative to their level, those lower class teams may be having a better season than the upper class teams.

It is not an exact science, but when we do the rankings we look at a number of factors. Win/loss record. How is that team doing against their own class? How did they do versus teams in classifications higher than theirs? District play for 3A-6A teams. Head to head.

Using those factors we rank the teams based on how they are doing relative to their level.

As a reminder, our first two Dominant Dozen champs were Tuttle (4A) in 2023 and Oktaha (2A) in 2024.

*The Rankings this year have expanded to 16, thus the “Sweet Sixteen.”

This is for fun, so please treat it as such.

Let’s take a look at the rankings for Week 7.

The First 8

We have a new #1 this week as Dewar (A-1, 27-0) takes over the top spot. The Dragons are the only undefeated team left in the state. They went 2-0 this past week highlighted by a 9-2 win over 3A Salina.

Blanchard (4A, 26-1) moves up one spot to #2 this week. The Lions went 3-0 this week highligted by a 4-2 win over rival and fellow Sweet 16 team, Tuttle.

The reason why Dewar and Blanchard moved up this week is because Owasso (6A, 27-2) lost a district game to Sand Springs. The Rams fall to only #3 as they lost to one of the top pitchers in the state, Easton Webb.

Edmond Memorial (6A, 23-3) moves up to #4 this week despite losing a game this week. Several other team lost this week. Memorial dropped a game at 6A’s Piedmont. The Bulldogs have shown they, along with Owasso, are 6A’s top 2 teams this season.

Jumping all the way up to #5 from #11 this week is Dale (2A-1, 20-3). The Pirates were on the outside looking in the Sweet 16 just 3 weeks ago, but the Pirates are 17-1 in their last 18 games with their lone loss to Okarche by 1 run. In that time frame, Dale has beaten nationally ranked Baylor (TN), North Rock Creek, Marlow, Noble, Stillwater, and Elgin along with Lone Grove and former #1 Newcastle this week.

Wright City (A-1, 23-3) comes in at #6 this week. The Lumberjax are on an 8 game heater at this point and look poised to challenge Dewar for the state title.

Elgin (5A, 22-4) stays at #7 this week after going 3-1. Their lone loss this past week was to 6A’s Choctaw in extra innings at the Piedmont/Deer Creek Festival.

Rounding out the first 8 is Newcastle (4A, 22-4). The Racers went 2-2 this week getting upset by OCS in district play by 1 run and losing to Dale.

The Second 8

Bixby (6A, 23-6), falls to #9 this week after going 3-1. The Spartans loss was on the road at Deer Creek

Hilldale (4A, 22-2) jumps 5 spots to #10 this week. Just 2 weeks ago, Hilldale was not ranked, but the Hornets afe on a 14 game winning streak and looking like a top contender in 4A.

Calera (2A-1, 20-2) moves up 2 spots to #11 going 2-0 last week.

Bethany (4A, 20-5) debuts in the Sweet 16 at #12 this week. The Bronchos went 3-1 last week splitting their district series with Tuttle then beating Elk City on Friday.

Coming in at #13 this week is Tuttle (4A, 22-6). Ranked at #8 last week, the Tigers went 1-2 last week losing to Bethany in district play and Blanchard on Friday.

Elk City (4A, 16-3) drops to #14 after losing to Bethany as well. The Elks slot behind Tuttle as they dropped a double header to the Tigers a few weeks ago.

Dropping to #15 is Ft Cobb-Broxton (B, 14-8). The Mustangs went 2-2 last week losing to Lone Grove and Edmond Santa Fe, but the Mustangs are undefeated (9-0) to teams in classes B-2A.

Rounding out the Sweet 16 is Okarche (A-1, 12-5). The Warriors have won 6 in a row beating Dibble, Dale, AmPo, Cashion, Calumet, and Weatherford by a combined score of 45-8. Three of the Warriors’ losses have been by 1 run.
