When Piedmont was in Class 5A, they started an annual event that would bring several 5A teams together for a weekend of baseball in preparation for the upcoming postseason. Last year when the Wildcats moved up to 6A, McAlester “took over” as they started to host the 5A Shootout.

It is back in SE Oklahoma for a 2nd year and this year a total of 11 teams will participate with games at McAlester HS and Eastern OK State College in Wilburton.

We’ve got to be honest, the concept of this event is a great idea. Playing teams that are like minded and looking to go far in the postseason this late in the season could only help each team.

This year’s festival will be played over 2 days with 5 games at McAlester on Thursday and 5 games at McAlester and 5 games at EOSC on Friday. Fortunately, no games are scheduled for Saturday as that looks like a rainy day.

Let’s take a look at the schedule and a few games we are looking forward to.

Schedule

Notable Games

Collinsville (18-5) vs Pryor (17-9), Thursday 12:15 p.m.

Collinsville has been one of the top 5A teams for a while now. The Cardinals have been state tournament qualifiers several times and have spent time in the SSBR Sweet 16 as recent as 2 weeks ago.

Pryor is another team that considers anything less than a state tournament appearance a disappointment. The Tigers are looking to make it back to the state tournament again this year.

Both teams sit at or near their respective districts and can host a regional depending how they do in district play next week.

Claremore (20-7) vs Noble (17-7), Friday 4:45 p.m.

If you were to look up “roller coaster season” in the dictionary, the 2025 Claremore Zebras would be in the definition. Claremore has an outstanding record with 20 wins at this point, but inexplicably they have losing streaks of 3 and 4 to equal their 7 losses.

Noble is another team that expects to be in the state tournament in the postseason. The Bears are having another good season as they are 14-2 against 5A competition. Their losses are to top teams like Carl Albert and Duncan with other to 2 – 6A teams and top small school team, Dale.
