When something starts over 50 years ago and has been going every year since (pandemics not withstanding), something is being done right. That is what the Duncan High School baseball program has done since 1972 and will do again this year as they host the Southern Oklahoma Invitational starting Thursday.

This year’s edition of the SOI will be played with teams from Class B up to Class 5A. It will be a festival format with teams playing anywhere from 2 to 3 games from Thursday to Saturday.

Let’s take a look at who is playing and some of the marquee matchups.

Marquee Matchups

Guthrie vs Duncan, Friday 10:00 a.m.

Guthrie comes into the SOI at 13-2, however those 2 losses just happend on Tuesday and Wednesday to Noble. What Blue Jays team will show up?

Duncan comes into the SOI at 18-5 and coming off an impressive district sweep over MacArthur. The Demons are a top state championship contender. Their 5 losses are to other state title contenders Carl Albert (2x), Blanchard, Newcastle, and CCS.

Washington vs Calumet, Friday 2:30 p.m.

Washington is the 3x defending 3A state champion. However, the Warriors have come back to the pack a little this season as their record is 13-7. Make no mistake about it, though, Washington still has the talent to compete with anyone. Owen Andrews is one of the best pitchers we’ve seen this season regardless of class.

Calumet is, once again, the best chance for a team from Class B to knock off Ft Cobb-Broxton for the state championship. The Chieftains aren’t afraid to play anyone.

This will be a good test for both teams.

Newcastle vs Lone Grove, Friday 4:45

Newcastle continues to impress this season. They’ve shown they can play with anyone this season as they are the only team to beat SSBR #1 Owasso. The Racers are coming off dismantling Mount St Mary in their district series this week and seem to be the top state title contender in 4A.

Lone Grove comes into the SOI at 20-3. The Longhorns are once again a state tournament contender. As impressive as their record is, Lone Grove has been outscored 36-6 in their 3 losses (Wright City, Tushka, and Sulphur). Which Longhorns team will we see?
