While there are several high school baseball tournaments each week around the state, there are a few that have rich histories where they are held in a high regard. One of those tournaments is this week – the Bill Tipton Classic.

Hosted by Carl Albert High School, the tournament is in it’s 20th season. It has grown to a whopping 16 teams and is played at 3 different sites (Carl Albert, Shawnee HS, Midwest City HS).

The format is a 3 plus 1. Teams will play 3 scheduled games between Thursday and Friday then a placement game on Saturday which is dependent on how the teams did on Thursday and Friday.

Teams from all across the state are coming in this weekend and included teams from 2A all the way up to 6A.

Notable Matchups

With the tournament having 3 pool play games for each team, we already know who will be playing each other Thursday and Friday.

Here are some notable matchups.

Elgin vs Stillwater, Carl Albert HS, Thurs 3:00 p.m.

Elgin comes into this event at 17-1 and ranked #5 in our SSBR Sweet Sixteen. The Owls have been impressive this season with wins over Collinsville and Ft Cobb-Broxton. Their lone loss was to then SSBR #1 Newcastle.

Stillwater comes into the Tipton at 14-3. The Pioneers have won 13 of their last 14 games. They are one of the state title contenders in 6A. Stillwater’s lineup is loaded and led by Ethan Holliday who is the top 2025 player in the state and the country.

El Reno vs Elgin, MWC HS, Fri 10:00 a.m.

El Reno comes into the event with a 10-4 record with those losses to Marlow, Newcastle, and Carl Albert twice. The wins that El Reno have are against teams they should absolutely beat. Outside of their loss to Marlow, their other 3 losses have been close with 2 of them the 1-run variety to Newcastle and Carl Albert. This tournament will be a good gauge to see where the Indians stack up in 5A.

Dale vs Stillwater, Carl Albert HS, Fri 10:00 a.m.

Dale comes into this event with a 14-3 record. The Pirates have played mostly above their 2A-1 level and are currently ranked by the coaches at the top team in that class. The tournament organizers didn’t do the Pirates any favors with their scheduling as they face Midwest City and Noble (two more than solid 5A squads) before squaring off vs Stillwater. The Pirates also have the late game on Thursday before the two early games on Friday.
