When Sooner State Baseball Report started in 2023, one of the things we did was try to evaluate who the best high school team in the state is relative to their level of play. We did that by creating the SSBR Dominant Dozen.

We take a look at who each team’s performance and the level of competition they have played. As the season goes on, head to head competition will obviously become more of a factor as well.

For example, are we saying that teams at the lower classes are better than say the top 6A teams? Maybe, maybe not. Most of the top upper teams have more depth than the lower class teams and they would most likely win a series with them. But relative to their level, those lower class teams may be having a better season than the upper class teams.

It is not an exact science, but when we do the rankings we look at a number of factors. Win/loss record. How is that team doing against their own class? How did they do versus teams in classifications higher than theirs? District play for 3A-6A teams. Head to head.

Using those factors we rank the teams based on how they are doing relative to their level.

As a reminder, our first two Dominant Dozen champs were Tuttle (4A) in 2023 and Oktaha (2A) in 2024.

*The Rankings this year have expanded to 16, thus the “Sweet Sixteen.”

This is for fun, so please treat it as such.

Let’s take a look at the Week 5 rankings.

The Top 8

Owasso (6A, 20-1) slides into the top spot as Newcastle (4A, 15-2) lost on the road to 6A’s Piedmont. The Rams have been playing the best baseball in the state as of late winning their last 17 games including a win over #13 Bixby (6A, 15-5) on Friday night. Before their 3-2 win over the Spartans, the Rams had not allowed a run in 8 straight games outscoring those opponents 90-0.

Moving up to #2 is Dewar (A-1, 22-0). The Dragons went 3-0 last week stretching their winning streak to start the season to 22.

Blanchard (4A, 17-1) comes in at #3 this week as the Lions have won 9 straight after losing to a Florida team over Spring Break. The Lions are perfect vs Oklahoma schools including wins over Chickasha, Duncan, and Ft Cobb-Broxton.

As stated above, Newcastle dropped their 2nd games of the season this past week – a last minute scheduled game at Piedmont on Thursday. The Racers drop no further than 4 based on their head to head win over Elgin.

Speaking of the Owls, Elgin (5A, 15-1) stays at #5 after going 3-0 on the week. The Owls have won 8 straight.

Moving up 2 spots to #6 this week is Edmond Memorial (6A, 16-2). The Bulldogs went 4-0 last week beating rival, Edmond North twice in District play as well as Union and Stillwater at the Gladys Winters Festival in Enid.

If it wasn’t for Owasso, one could make the case that Tuttle (4A, 18-2) is playing the best in the state right now as they come in at #7. The Tigers have won 15 straight and went 4-0 last week sweeping Heritage Hall in District play and sweeping a double header at previously unbeaten Elk City on Thursday.

Calera (2A-1, 15-1) moves up to #8 as they keep on winning. The Bulldogs have won 8 straight after losing to a team from Tennessee on Spring Break.

The 2nd 8

Elk City (4A, 12-2) doesn’t slide past #9 after losing their only 2 games last week to Tuttle.

Wright City (A1, 15-2) moves up to #10 after going 2-0 last week.

Mount St Mary (4A, 14-4) moves up to #11 going 2-0 last week.

Choctaw (6A, 12-4) drops 5 spots to #12 after getting swept in District play by Edmond Santa Fe.

Bixby stays at #13 going 3-1 last week with their loss a 1-run loss to #1 Owasso.

Collinsville (5A, 14-2) and Canute (A-1, 12-1) each move up a spot to 14 and 15 after going 1-0 and 2-0 respectively.

Dale (2A-1, 13-2) enters the the Sweet 16 this week. The Pirates have been impressive of late winning their last 10 games in a row. Their losses this year are to 6A’s Edmond Santa Fe and a Tennesse school over Spring Break.
