All games for Thursday have been cancelled. Newcastle will play 1 game at Piedmont on Thursday night, however.
We are now into week 5 of the OSSAA baseball season and we are also in the thick of tournament/festivals season. There are several events on the docket for this week, but as you may be aware, the weather isn’t looking too favorable to get them played (or at least all of them played).
An event that has a sneaky good field in it is the annual Newcastle Baseball Festival. It features teams from Classes 6A, 4A, 3A, and A. Also, there are 2 teams that are currently in the SSBR Sweet Sixteen. Newcastle comes in at the top spot while Mount St Mary is at 14.
Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and they are able to get some games in.
Lets take a look at some of the more intriguing matchups.
Piedmont (6A, 11-6) vs Community Christian (3A, 11-5), 2:30 p.m.
Piedmont is among several teams in 6A that have a legitimate shot at making the state tournament in 2025. One 6A coach said, “there are about 20 teams that have a shot.” Piedmont definitely falls into that category.
CCS is no slouch in 3A. A legit state tournament in 3A, the Royals have one of the best arms in the state in Elijah Williams. Don’t know is Williams will get the start here, but if he does, it’s a tough task for any team to face him.
Piedmont (6A, 11-6) vs SSBR #14 Mount St Mary Rockets (3A, 14-4), Friday, 4:45 p.m.
Mount St Mary hit a little bump in the road over Spring Break in Arizona losing 3 games, but outside of that, the Rockets have been impressive. MSM already has wins at Washington and Ft Cobb-Broxton along with a win at home vs Chickasha. Against Oklahoma teams, the Rockets haven’t given up more than 5 runs in a game outside of their loss to Heritage Hall (7).
SSBR #1 Newcastle (4A, 14-1) vs Ponca City (6A, 5-9), Saturday, 7:00 p.m.
Scheduled to wrap up the tournament on Saturday night, Newcastle will face a team that seems to be better than their record. The Wildcats play a brutal schedule in 6A and outside of their games with Owasso and Stillwater, they’ve held their own. Ponca City has a win over the 2024 6A State Runner Up, Sand Springs, and 3A state tournament contender, Holland Hall.
Newcastle has been most impressive this season. The Racers have wins over Edmond Santa Fe, Owasso, Broken Arrow, Life Prep (KS), Elgin, Duncan, and Chickasha. Their only loss was a 2-1 loss at Tuttle.
After hosting this tournament all 3 days and playing the last game on Saturday night, will the Racers avoid the classic “trap game”?
