When Sooner State Baseball Report started in 2023, one of the things we did was try to evaluate who the best high school team in the state is relative to their level of play. We did that by creating the SSBR Dominant Dozen.

We take a look at who each team’s performance and the level of competition they have played. As the season goes on, head to head competition will obviously become more of a factor as well.

For example, are we saying that teams at the lower classes are better than say the top 6A teams? Maybe, maybe not. Most of the top upper teams have more depth than the lower class teams and they would most likely win a series with them. But relative to their level, those lower class teams may be having a better season than the upper class teams.

It is not an exact science, but when we do the rankings we look at a number of factors. Win/loss record. How is that team doing against their own class? How did they do versus teams in classifications higher than theirs? District play for 3A-6A teams. Head to head.

Using those factors we rank the teams based on how they are doing relative to their level.

As a reminder, our first two Dominant Dozen champs were Tuttle (4A) in 2023 and Oktaha (2A) in 2024.

*The Rankings this year have expanded to 16, thus the “Sweet Sixteen.”

This is for fun, so please treat it as such.

Let’s take a look at the Week 2 rankings. (Teams had must have played a game to be eligible for the rankings.)

The Top 8

The top 4 teams of Newcastle (4A, 7-0), Edmond Memorial (6A, 5-0), Mount St Mary (4A, 6-0), and Wright City (A-1, 4-0) all went undefeated last week. Wright City had perhaps the best win of the four last week against then SSBR #15 Lone Grove on the road (13-4). MSM beat 2024 6A State Champ, Westmoore, while Memorial swept their district series with Mustang.

Jumping up to #5 this week is Collinsville (5A, 8-0). The Cardinals had the best win of anyone last week, an 8-0 run rule over then #5 Carl Albert.

Silo (3A, 4-0), Owasso (6A, 9-1), and Blanchard (4A, 6-0) moves into #6, #7, and #8 respectively. Silo beat 5A’s McAlester and a team from Arizona. Owasso swept Ponca City before heading on their annual Florida trip where they’ve beat up on 3 Florida schools so far. Blanchard had an impressive win over Chickasha, 7-1.

The Rest

Dewar (A-1, 11-0) makes the biggest jump this week from #16 to #9 after beating Barnsdall, AmPo, Moss, and Roff by a combined score of 31-6. The Dragons shutout the last 3 teams.

Rattan (A-2, 2-0) enters the poll at #10 after getting their season started last week. The Rams are the favorite in A-2.

Elgin (5A, 6-0) and Claremore (5A, 9-0) move up to #11 and #12 respectively staying undefeated.

Carl Albert (5A, 6-1) and Bixby (6A, 6-1) fall to #13 and #14 respectively after suffering their first losses of the season. The Titans lost to then #8 Collinsville and Bixby lost to Bishop Kelley.

Washington (3A, 6-1) and Ft Cobb-Broxton (B, 4-1) make their debut in the poll this week at #15 and #16. The Mustangs began their season last week. The Warriors get the nod over FCB based on the 6-4 win over FCB last week.
