When Sooner State Baseball Report started in 2023, one of the things we did was try to evaluate who the best high school team in the state is relative to their level of play. We did that by creating the SSBR Dominant Dozen.

We take a look at who each team’s performance and the level of competition they have played. As the season goes on, head to head competition will obviously become more of a factor as well.

For example, are we saying that teams at the lower classes are better than say the top 6A teams? Maybe, maybe not. Most of the top upper teams have more depth than the lower class teams and they would most likely win a series with them. But relative to their level, those lower class teams may be having a better season than the upper class teams.

It is not an exact science, but when we do the rankings we look at a number of factors. Win/loss record. How is that team doing against their own class? How did they do versus teams in classifications higher than theirs? District play for 3A-6A teams. Head to head.

Using those factors we rank the teams based on how they are doing relative to their level.

As a reminder, our first two Dominant Dozen champs were Tuttle (4A) in 2023 and Oktaha (2A) in 2024.

*The Rankings this year have expanded to 16, thus the “Sweet Sixteen.”

This is for fun, so please treat it as such.

Let’s take a look at the Week 1 rankings. (Teams had must have played a game to be eligible for the rankings.)

The Top 8

Newcastle (4A, 4-0) gets the top spot in week 1 of the Sweet 16. The Racers are considered one of the favorites in Class 4A this year and they may have shown why to start the season. They beat 3 Class 6A teams all away from home (Edmond Santa Fe, Owasso, and Broken Arrow). Edmond Santa Fe and Owasso are considered state championship contenders in 6A.

Edmond Memorial (6A, 3-0) comes in at #2 after a start beating 6A state tournament/championship contenders Piedmont and Choctaw along with long time 4A power, Tuttle with the last 2 games away from home.

At #3 we have Mount St Mary (4A, 4-0). Moving back up to 4A from 3A, the Rockets shutout the team who knocked them out of the 3A semifinals last year, Washington, on the road. After 2 District wins over Ardmore, MSM then beat another 4A favorite, Chickasha on Thursday.

Wright City (A-1, 2-0) is next at #4. The Lumberjax are ranked here not necessarily on the strength of their 2 wins, but rather what this team did in the fall. They were the best team in all of the classes and loss only 1 game. Rattan is the team that beat the Jax, but WC beat the Rams 2 other times including a dominant win in the state championship. Rattan is in the newly formed A-2 and Wright City is clearly the favorite in A-1 along with just a handful of other teams.

Carl Albert (5A, 3-0) has won 3 of the last 4 Class 5A state titles including the last two. We’re at the point where until someone knocks off Carl Albert, they are considered the top team in 5A. The Titans beat Duncan in the opener in a rematch of the Class 5A title game in 2024.

Another year and Bixby (6A, 4-0) is a top team. Bixby outscored their opponent 34-5 to start the season.

Silo (3A, 2-0) is at 7 also based on what they did in the Fall. The Rebels won the Class 2A championship and they were almost as dominant as Wright City was. They did lose to the Lumberjax in their lone meeting in the Fall, but they won the 2A championship game in dominant fashion over Dale.

Collinsville (5A, 4-0) comes in at 8. It seems the Cardinals is a top team that few talk about. All they do is win ball games and make state tournament. They’ve gotten off to a good start again this year including a win over 6A Jenks. Collinsville travels to Carl Albert for a huge game on Friday.
