With the deep freeze the state of Oklahoma and the surrounding states were in last week, several of this past weekend’s series finished on Monday.
Let’s recap the weekend that was.
NCAA D1
If you’re a baseball fan in Oklahoma, you have to be impressed with what the Sooners did in Round Rock. Not only did the Sooners go 3-0, they did it by beating a sneaky good Minnesota team in the frigid weather on Friday, but they beat #7 Oregon State and #2 Virginia on Saturday and Sunday respectively. D1 Baseball had no chance but rank the Sooners.
True Freshman, Kyle Branch, was named the tournament MVP and Kyson Witherspoon was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week.
For their part, Oklahoma State had 2 “get right” games against UT-Arlington beating them 19-4 and 10-4. Several Cowboys had good offensive series.
ORU came back in the 9th to win game 1 at Arizona State, but unfortunately the Sun Devils kept the Golden Eagles at bay in games 2 and 3.
NCAA D2
In the GAC, it was a good weekend for both SE OK St and OBU. The Savage Storm swept Henderson State to move to 4-2 in the conference and OBU won their series over #21 Arkansas Monticello.
SEOSU scored 20 runs in their first 2 games vs HSU while winning a squeaker, 6-5, in game 3.
OBU split their DH on Sunday, ahead of Monday’s deciding game. The Bison were down 8-2 in the middle of the 4th before they exploded for 8 runs in the bottom half and going on to win, 19-11. The Bison had 4 players go yard and 10 of their 19 hits were for extra bases.
Check out this stat from the series.
In the MIAA, both NSU and Rogers St swept their respective series. The Riverhawks swept their series over conference foe, Newman, while the Hillcats swept non conference opponent, Colorado Christian.
NSU is currently 6-5 (3-0) while Rogers State sits at 8-1 (0-0). These 2 will play each other this weekend.
UCO, on the other hand, struggled at Washburn. Up by a run late in game 1, the Bronchos lost the lead and the game 4-3. After losing game 2, the ‘Chos put up 5 runs in the 7th inning of game 3 before surviving a late surge from the Ichabods and winning, 9-8.
UCO is 10-4 (1-2) on the young season.
NAIA
The only series involving 2 Oklahoma teams was OCU vs SCU. The Stars came into the series riding the struggle bus while the Eagles were riding a 12 game winning streak.
OCU is traditionally one of the top teams in the SAC and while they’ve struggled so far this year, it was still a good test for the Eagles. Game 1 played out like history says with the Stars winning handily. However, SCU showed some grit and won games 2 and 3, 7-3 and 6-3 respectively.
USAO kept their dominance over Wayland Baptist going sweeping Saturday’s DH before losing game 3 on Sunday.
MACU hosted College of the Ozarks on Sunday and Monday, but they were the visiting team due to weather moving the series from Missouri. The Evangels were rude hosts in the Ozarks’ conference debut outscoring the Bobcats 35-2 in the 3 games.
Oklahoma Wesleyan is now 16-1 on season after sweeping St Mary on Sunday and Monday. Just like MACU, the Eagles were dominant in the 3 games outscoring the Spires 33-5.
NJCAA
The only intrastate series this weekend was Carl Albert State vs Connors State. The Vikings took both games in Warner on Sunday before Connors won the lone game in Poteau on Monday.
The story right now in the JUCO ranks is how well the D2 schools are doing. NOC Tonkawa is now 13-1 after dropping their first game of the season to D3 #2 Dallas College Eastfield on Sunday. Carl Albert State is 9-3 and has won every series so far. Murray State is now 12-4 and riding a 9 game winning streak. NOC Enid is 9-3 after sweeping East Central College and has won 5 in a row. Redlands is 10-5 and is only 4 games away from matching their win total from 2024.
