Since SSBR was started, O would have the weekly “Five Things You Should Know” piece every Monday. I would take would point out five things from the weekend that was that I thought was important enough to highlight. For the first month plus of the season, it would be about the happenings in college baseball. When the month of March rolled around, I’d include high school baseball as well.
I’m going to pivot in this piece and start doing a recapping the happenings in college baseball and when high school starts in a few weeks, I’ll do a separate piece for high school.
So let’s get started.
NCAA D1
I don’t know about you, but I get irrationally upset when I hear people say that college baseball started this weekend. Um, college baseball started January 23 in the Sooner State and has been going on for 3 weeks.
But I digress. I get it. Most people only think of D1 being college athletics in general.
Anyways, D1 started this weekend including the three schools in Oklahoma.
OU and ORU both dominated their respective opening series. OU swept Lehigh by scores of 11-3, 13-3, and 12-1 with the last two games via run rule. ORU swept Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3-2, 3-0, and 19-0.
Yes, both Lehigh and UAPB aren’t predicted to do much this season as both were picked in the bottom half of their respective conferences, but the Sooners and Golden Eagles did what they were supposed to.
The story of the weekend for both to me was the pitching. The three starters for OU (Kyson Witherspoon, Cam Johnson, and Malachi Witherspoon) all went 5+ innings and were dominant in their opening starts. ORU did not let the Lions score in the last 18 innings of play over the weekend. Weston Rouse, Nathan Love, and Trent Martin were impressive in their starts for ORU as well.
As for OSU, well, it didn’t go so well. The Pokes played considerably tougher competition, but they went 1-2 in the Shriners Chidlren’s Classic. OSU allowed Clemson to come back on Friday, to steal the game. OSU dominated Louisville in Saturday’s game before losing to hated Texas in the finale on Sunday. Texas plated 14 runs on the board against OSU cruising to a 14-8 win.
The problem wasn’t the bats for the Pokes. OSU had 14 extra base hits in their 3 games with 6 of them bombs leading to their 26 total runs in the 3 games.
NCAA D2
The story for D2 this weekend was the weather. The cold and precipitation caused delays and relocations for most series. NWOSU had their series moved to Denison, TX vs Harding. SWOSU had their 3rd game vs Arkansas Tech cancelled on Saturday, while the rest of the GAC teams moved their series back to start on Sunday. UCO and NSU had their series adjusted to end on Saturday while Rogers State’s series got cancelled all together.
The Great American Conference started their season this weekend. As of the writing of this recap, only 2 series has completed. NWOSU got swept in their series vs GAC favorite Harding. SWOSU moved the double header with ATU from Saturday to Friday. They split the DH with the Wonder Boys before their game 3 on Saturday was cancelled.
OBU and ECU split their double headers with SAU and Henderson St respectively on Sunday. Southeastern OK St won their opener at Ouachita Baptist on Sunday. All three teams will go for series wins on Monday.
If OBU wants to be an upper tier team in the GAC, winning a series on the road at Southern Arkansas would be a great start.
UCO swept their 3 games vs Colorado Christian while NSU split their adjusted 4 game series vs UC Colorado Springs. Both teams and Rogers State open MIAA play next weekend.
While OC and Cameron went a combined 1-7 this weekend in the Lone Star Conference, the Eagles did get a win vs 15th ranked Lubbock Christian.
NAIA
The story of the weekend at the NAIA level was series wins by OK Wesleyan and USAO.
The Eagles were riding an 11 game winning streak into their opening KCAC series against Friends University. The series was supposed to be played in Wichita but it was moved to Connors State in Warner. The Eagles won the late night Friday opener in extra innings. On Saturday, they lost the first game of the double header before winning game 3 comfortably, 9-2. This is a good start for the Eagles as Friends finished in the upper part of the conference in 2024.
The Drovers hosted #11 Bellevue for what ended up being 3 games. USAO swept the DH on Friday before coming up a run short in a comeback bid on Saturday. USAO and the rest of the Sooner Athletic Conference open conference play this coming weekend.
NJCAA
Good news for our JUCO squads this weekend – only 1 team lost their series.
NOC Tonkawa continued their winning ways moving to 11-0 on the season. The Mavs played some tougher competition this weekend and it was also their first time away from Tonkawa.
Eastern was impressive in a 4 game sweep of Highland CC. They won their games by a combined score of 65-16.
Seminole State (2-1, Cloud County) and Redlands (3-1, Dawson CC) won their series.
Murray State won their one game on the road at Hill College.
Western came won their last 2 games at Coastal Bend to split the 4 game series while Carl Albert State split their DH with Panola before game 3 was cancelled.
Rose State was the only team to lose as they got swept by #23 Hutchinson.
