When Sooner State Baseball Report started in 2023, one of the things we did was try to evaluate who the best college team in the state is relative to their level of play. We did that by creating the SSBR College Power 10.

We take a look at who each team’s performance and the level of competition they have played. As the season goes on, head to head competition will obviously become more of a factor as well.

For example, are we saying that teams at the junior college level are better than say OSU or OU? No. But relative to their level, those JUCO teams could be having a better season than OSU or OU.

As a reminder, our first two Power 10 champs were ORU in 2023 after they made a run to the CWS and MACU in 2024 after their dominant SAC regular season and tournament championships on the way to their first ever NAIA National Tournament appearance as a #1 regional seed.

This is for fun, so please treat it as such.

Let’s take a look at the Week 1 rankings.

*Teams that haven’t played yet are not eligible for consideration.

NOC Tonkawa takes the top spot in the initial Power 10. Coming into the season receiving votes in the preseason national poll, the Mavs did not disappoint in their opening series. Tonkawa scored 50 runs in the 4 games while giving up only 5 including a shutout in their 4th game.

Murray State comes in at #2. While they went 2-2 on the weekend, the Aggies come in on the strength of winning on the road at Division 1 #1 Blinn. Austin Haley was outstanding on the mound and at the plate as he pitched 6.1 innings without giving up an earned run and going 2-5 at the plate with an RBI and 2 doubles.

Oklahoma Wesleyan is the first team to 6 wins as they picked up another 3 game sweep this time over Univ Health Sciences and Pharmacy. The Eagles scored 35 runs in the 3 games over the Eutectics.

Seminole State went out to Hobbs, NM and won their 3 game series over a talented New Mexico JC squad coming back in both wins.

NWOSU is the highest ranked D2 squad as they started with a 3-1 series win over the Colorado Christian College. The Rangers were the highest ranked Oklahoma squad in the GAC preseason poll.

USAO and MACU come in at #6 and #7 respectively. Both teams are at .500 right now, but they have played the toughest schedule of any Oklahoma team yet as both have played multiple games against nationally ranked teams.

SWOSU and SNU come in at #8 and #9 on the strength of 3-1 opening weekends. The Bulldogs won their series over Colorado School of Mines while SNU beat NM Highlands twice and split with Newman.

Rounding out the 10 is Cameron. The Aggies split their series with Texas A&M International. Cameron scored 44 runs in their 4 games including 26(!) in the finale which saw Lance Barnett go 5-5 with 3 HRs, 7 RBIs, 3B, and 2 IBB. The Dust Devils finished 6th in the Lone Star Conference in 2024.
