Last December, the AAA club in Oklahoma City announced they were getting rid of the Dodgers name and would spend the 2024 season as the Oklahoma City Baseball Club.
The club also announced that they would undergo a 2 year process to rebrand to a “fresh, local team name.”
It only took the club 10 months to decide on the new name as the club announced on Saturday night the new team name is the…Comets?
The club said the “Comets” name was an homage to Oklahoma’s Mickey Mantle as he was known as the “Commerce Comet.” However, it is kind of funny as Mantle never played for the Dodgers (yes, I know it is not a guarantee that the Dodgers will always use OKC as the AAA club). It is also awkward that Mantle played for the Dodgers’ rival, New York Yankees, as they play Game 2 of the World Series on the same night of the announcement.
It was also explained that “the OKC Comets name and different marks that display images of space suggest a look toward the future and enables us to have a bit of fun bringing our new identity to life for our fans.”
Reaction
I’ll admit that the color scheme and logos are pretty cool and that the use of blue is understandable with the Dodgers connection. However, I still can’t get over the name and I’m not the only one.
OKC Comets President/General Manager Michael Byrnes said the following.
The local community and key stakeholders played a significant role in selecting the new name.
However, the reactions to the Comets’ post on X (formerly Twitter) paint a picture of “disapproval” from fans.
Regardless of how we may feel about the new name and logo, let’s hope we all can stay behind the local team. These players are only one step away from the Majors and we will still get to see Major League ballplayers play when they are on rehab assignments.
