This past Spring we started recognizing players and pitchers of small colleges and JUCOs weekly.

This Fall we wanted to extend that recognitions to our talented high school players here in the Sooner State as well.

Each week we send out nomination forms to the coaches to complete and we will choose a position player and pitcher from each class (2A, A, B) for the weekly award. The winners will receive something from SSBR for their achievement and each player/pitcher nominated will be listed in our weekly post.

Here are our winners for Week 7 (9/23-9/28).

Class 2A

Player of the Week

Tristan Gibson, Tushka Tigers

In case you hadn’t noticed, the Tushka Tigers have been playing good baseball in the 2nd month of the season. One of the reasons why has been the play of Tristan Gibson and his performance as the lead off hitter.

In his 3 games this past week, Gibson did what you want a lead off hitter to do…get on base and make things happen. He got on base at a clip of 3 out of 4 times, and stole 6 bags. He also took advantage when he had runners on base by knocking in 5 runs.

Gibson’s line: G 3, .700 (7-10), .750 OBP, 1.00 SLG, 2B, 3B 5 RBI, 2 BB, R, 6 SB

Other nominees:

  • Jackson Harris, Dale Pirates

Pitcher of the Week

Kaiden Neill, Colbert Leopards

The Colbert Leopards have had an interesting season. Jumping out to an 8-0 start, they’ve gone 14-12 since then. When they beat a team the caliber of Silo via shutout one takes notice.

Kaiden Neill was the pitcher for Colbert on Friday night that had the Rebels baffled at the plate. There is no better way to explain what he did than by looking at his line score.

Neill’s line: G/GS 1, CG, SO, 7 IP, 3 H, 5 K

Other nominees:

  • Shooter Boatright, Tushka Tigers

Class A

Player & Pitcher of the Week

Jake Beutler, Canute Trojans

Earlier this season, Buetler became the first 2x Player of the Week award winner, and now in the last week of the season, he becomes the first 3X Player of the Week award winner.

In his 3 games last week that included a District sweep, Beutler was an on base machine getting on at a rate of 3 out of 4 times.

Beutler’s line: G 3, .714 AVG (5-7), .750 OBP, 1.14 SLG, HR, 5 RBI

Other nominees:

  • Cashton McIntire, Ripley Warriors

For as good as Beutler was at the plate, he may have been even better on the mound. Over 6 innings pitched in 2 games, Beutler threw 79 pitches and 60 of them were strikes – at 76% strike rate. Not only that, only 1 of the 18 outs Beutler got was not a strikeout. Add the 2 hits he gave up, only 3 of the 20 batters he faced DIDN’T strike out.

Beutler’s line: G/GS 2, 6 IP, 2 H, 17 K

Other nominees:

  • Dallas Sanchez, Navajo Indians
  • Bryce Smith, Ripley Warriors

Class B

Player of the Week

Cody Cook, Stuart Hornets

This last week of the season Cook has put himself in an elite club. Cody has become the 4th multi time winner of a weekly award.

In the past weeks, we’ve said that hitters were near impossible to get out. Cook did everyone of those players better this last week as he was perfect at the plate. In 9 plate appearances last week, Cook got on base 8 times (7 hits, BB) with the 9th appearance a sac bunt.

Cook’s line: G 4: 1.00 AVG (7-7), 1.00 OBP, 1.43 SLG, 3 2B, 7 RBI, BB, SB

Pitcher of the Week

Aiden Cooper, Varnum Whippets

In the District Championship game vs a good Big Pasture team, Cooper provided what the Whippets needed to allow a run rule and advance to Regionals.

Cooper had a near 66% strike rate (75-49) and allowed only 3 Ranger hitters get on base (H, 2 BB).

Cooper’s line: 4 IP, H, 11 K, 2 BB

Other nominees:

  • Nolan Stewart, Stuart Hornets
