The weekly SSBR Fall Elite Eight is sponsored this season by our partner, Conner Darnell Designs. If you have a need for a graphic designer, photographer, or sports media, give Conner a look at his website: connerdarnelldesigns.com.

Here at SSBR we try to have fun with what we do. We cover a sport that is supposed to be fun and we want to convey that in our content.

One of the ways we do it is by doing our version of a ranking system. We take all the teams regardless of classification and use a panel of voteres to do our best to rank them on how they are doing relative to their class.

*In the Spring we have the caveat that says we are not ranking them on a “head to head” basis. In the Fall, teams may play each other regardless of class more regularly.

We also do our rankings based on results more than what we think who would necessarily win a game. If a spot comes down to two teams, if they’ve played head to head the result of that game weighs heavily in that decision. (The first week’s rankings, however, do have what a team’s expectations for the season factored in, but as the season goes along it will be the results that matter.)

In the Spring we do a “Dominant Dozen” and last Fall we did a “Super Six.” This season we are doing an “Elite Eight” because there aren’t as many teams as the Spring, but six is too little for the Fall

As always, this is for fun so please treat it as such.

Teams Dropping Out

  • Okarche Warriors (PR: 6): Went 2-2 last week losing to Dale (4-0) and Sterling (1-0) while beating Binger-Oney (7-0) and Roff (14-2)

Teams Receiving Votes

  • Tushka Tigers (2A), 16-7: The Tigers are 9-2 in the month of September including wins over Oktaha (2x) and Byng.

8. Ripley Warriors (A), 22-7

  • Prev rank: NR
  • Last week: 4-1

Ripley has been one of the best teams in the month of September. They are 11-2 including wins over Byng, AmPo, and Okarche en route to winning the AmPo/Okarche Tournament last week. They hosted their own tournament this week losing to fellow SSBR Elite Eight team, Calumet, in the semis before beating Oktaha for 3rd.

This week: Tues at SSBR # 5 Dale; Fri vs Bennington (Class A Districts)

7. Calumet Chieftains (B), 21-4

  • Prev rank: T4
  • Last week: 4-1

Calumet was on their way to a perfect 5-0 week and a Ripley Invitational championship until Navajo upset them in the championship team. The Chieftains falling to #7 is not about what they did or didn’t do, but more about what the teams that jumped them did in going undefeated this past week. Calumet is more than capable than beating any of the teams in the state.

This week: Tues at Big Pasture; Thur-Sat Districts vs Carney, Lomega

6. Canute Trojans (A), 24-4

  • Prev rank: 8
  • Last week: 4-0

Canute had another undefeated week last week and hold the longest current winning streak in the state at 14. Canute beat their 4 opponents by a combined score of 52-10. The Trojans were playing in the championshp game of the Hammon Tournament until it was rained out after an inning of play.

This week: Mon: vs Arnett; Thurs vs Wellston (Class A Districts)

5. Dale Pirates (2A), 20-5

  • Prev rank: 7
  • Last week: 4-0

Don’t look now, but here comes the surging Dale Pirates. They are currently on a 7 game heater including going 4-0 last week with wins over Okarche, Oktaha, Arapaho-Butler, and AmPo.

Looking at the boxscores of their games, the Pirates are getting contributions from several players and it looks like head coach, Jimmy Harris, is getting the Pirates in the direction of peaking at the right time:

This week: Mon at Mulhall-Orlando; Tues vs SSBR #8 Ripley; Thurs vs Vanoss

4. Silo Pirates (2A), 21-2

  • Prev rank: 2
  • Last week: 4-1

3. Ft Cobb-Broxton Mustangs (B), 24-5

  • Prev rank: 3
  • Last week: 4-0

2. Wright City Lumberjax (A), 23-2

  • Prev rank: 1
  • Last week: 4-1

1. Rattan Rams (A), 21-4

  • Prev rank: T4
  • Last week: 5-0

This is where it gets interesting. It is really splitting hairs between these 4, but let’s try our best to explain. (Luckily several of these teams have played each other the last couple of weeks.)

  • Silo at #4 may seem harsh seeing how they’ve spent the most time at #1 this season. However, they are the only 1 of the 4 to lose twice the last 2 weeks and both were to teams ahead of them (FCB and Rattan).
  • FCB moved into the #3 spot last week with a great week including a win over Silo. However, we can’t rank them ahead of Wright City since the Jax beat them.
  • Wright City lost to Rattan in the bottom of the 7th on Saturday so they drop to #2.
  • Rattan has won 12 in a row including wins over Wright City and Silo while claiming the Calera Tournament and Rattan Fall Classic.
This week:
  • Silo: Mon at Oktaha; Fri at Colbert; Sat at SSBR #2 Wright City
  • FCB: Mon at Sterling; Thurs vs Milburn/Arnett (Class B Districts)
  • Wright City: Mon vs Stuart; Thurs vs Rock Creek (Class A Districts); Sat vs SSBR #4 Silo
  • Rattan: Mon at Caney; Tues at Rock Creek; Thurs vs Ninnekah (Class A Districts); Fri vs Oktaha
