The 2024 fall season is now past the half way point and we are starting to see who are the contenders and pretenders are for the most part.

The 5th full week is upon us and we’ve got what is perhaps the most competitive week ahead. There are several tournaments at the end of the week with most of the top teams in ’24 playing in them.

Because of that, the marquee matchups that aren’t part of those events are in the early part of the week. Seeing how our SSBR Games of the Week focus on non tournament/festival games, our GOTW’s this week are all on Monday or Tuesday.

Let’s take a look.

SSBR #3 Okarche at SSBR #6 Ft Cobb-Broxton, Monday, 5:00 p.m.

This is the first of 3 matchups this week that feature both teams in the latest SSBR Elite Eight.

Okarche takes their stellar 12-2 record and 6 game winning streak on the road in this interclass matchup. Ft Cobb-Broxton lost to Canute on Friday, but they’ve won 12 of their last 13 games.

Both teams have outstanding pitching staffs with Easton Roby and Brett Carnott (among others) pitching for the Warriors and Blaine Bellamy and Mason Luecht (among others) on the Mustangs side.

Both of these teams play in big tournaments later in the week with Okarche cohosting the AmPo/Okarche Tournament and FCB playing in Silo. The Mustangs also have a big game vs Dale on Tuesday.

SSBR #7 Byng at SSBR #1 Silo, Monday, 5:00 p.m.

This is the 2nd of 3 matchups with both teams in the SSBR Elite Eight.

Silo is undefeated at 13-0 this season with only 5 of their games going a full 7 innings. Their closest game was a 3-0 win to a team from Missouri (Licking, MO). At this point they are the clear favorite in Class 2A and the best team in the Sooner State.

As it was pointed out yesterday in the SSBR Elite Eight write up, Byng is the 3rd best team in 2A at this point, but they are still without a “signature” win. In the Pirates’ 3 losses to Calera, Calumet, and Wright City, they’ve lost by a total of only 4 runs while they’ve outscored their opponents by an average of over 5 runs/game.

A win by Byng would go a long way in establishing them a true contender in 2A.

Arapaho-Butler at SSBR #8 Canute, Tuesday, 4:30 p.m.

This game may not feature both teams in the SSBR Elite Eight, but Arapaho-Butler had been in the previous 2 before this latest eidition.

The Indians lost 2 of 3 games last week with those losses to AmPo and current SSBR #3 Okarche. So they did lose to 2 potential Class A state tournament teams and possible title contenders. A-B will be looking to make a statement by beating one of the hottest teams in the state.

Canute is coming off a 5-0 week this week with a highlight 4-0 win over Ft Cobb-Broxton on Friday. They Trojans had been on the fringe as a state tournament contender in Class A, but last week showed they may just be that. A win over a talented A-B teams would go a long way in entrenching them as such.

Boswell Scorpions at Tupelo Tigers, Tuesday, 4:30 p.m.

One might question this as a “GOTW,” but this game could go a long way in determining who could potentially host a regional in Class B.

If everything holds “par” in Class B, the top 3 seeds for the postseason look set with Calumet, FCB, and Stuart. The battle for the #4 spot and regional host looks to be between Caney, Asher, Sentinel, Boswell, and Tupelo (not necessarily in that order).

Boswell looks like they may be the favorite there as they have a good record currently at 11-3. Tupelo looks to be the long shot as they currently have a losing record although their schedule is a good reason for that.

SSBR #5 Dale at SSBR #6 Ft Cobb-Broxton, Tuesday, 5:00 p.m.

This is the last of the 3 matchups featuring both teams in the Elite Eight.

Dale comes into this matchup as one of the top 2 teams in Class 2A. They are coming off a big run rule win over Class B #1 Calumet on Friday.

As stated before, FCB is coming in as winners of 12 of their last 13 games.

These 2 teams met in the Dale Invitational on the first weekend of the season with Dale winning 10-5.
