This past Spring we started recognizing players and pitchers of small colleges and JUCOs weekly.

This Fall we wanted to extend that recognitions to our talented high school players here in the Sooner State as well.

Each week we send out nomination forms to the coaches to complete and we will choose a position player and pitcher from each class (2A, A, B) for the weekly award. The winners will receive something from SSBR for their achievement and each player/pitcher nominated will be listed in our weekly post.

Here are our winners for Week 1 (8/12-8/17).

Class 2A

Player of the Week

Jett Higdon, Dale

Wouldn’t you know it that in the first week of our awards two players would make it a more than difficult decision? Both Higdon and Darren Ledford had monster weeks for their teams.

Jett Higdon got the nod this week because while Ledford had 4 bombs to Higdon’s 1, Higdon had a higher average, OBP, and 1 more RBI compared to Ledford in 1 less game. Dale put up run totals of 10, 10, and 21 in winning their Dale Invitational and Higdon was a huge catalyst for the Pirates.

This is not take anything away from Ledford’s week. Probably just about any other week he wins the Player of the Week.

Higdon’s Line: (3 games) .750 AVG (6-8), .818 OBP, HR, 2B, 9 RBI, 6 R, 3BB

Other nominees:

  • Darren Ledford, Oktaha: (4 games) .616 (8-13), 4 HR, 2 2B, 8 RBI, 7 R
  • Shooter Boatright, Tushka: (4 games) .538 (7-13), 4 2B, 3 RBI
  • Isaac Olives, Santa Fe South: (3 games) .625 (5-8), 2B, 4 RBI, 3 SB
  • Kaden Dean, Preston: (3 games) .500 (6-12), HR, 3 RBI, 2 SB
  • Jeret House, Silo: (2 games) .571 (4-7), 2 HR, 7 RBI

Pitcher of the Week

Anthony Carter, Santa Fe South

When the nomination forms went out on Saturday afternoon, Santa Fe South Head Coach, Jason Pucciarelli was the first coach to submit his nominations and he did it quickly. Not really sure if it was a coincidence or not, but we can see why if it wasn’t

Anthony Carter had himself a day in his first start vs Fletcher. Carter was dominant against the Wildcats leading the Saints to a 2-1 win.

Carter’s line: (W) CG, 7 IP, 3 H, ER, 16 K, BB

Other nominees:

  • Jack Rooker, Dale: G 1, 1-0, 5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 4 BB – Rooker kept Oktaha’s top hitters off balance according to Head Coach, Jimmy Harris
  • Hunter White, Tushka: G 2, 1-0, 8 IP, 2 H, ER, 8 K, BB
  • Jace Basquez, Preston: G 1, 1-0, 6 IP, 3 H, 6 K, BB

Class A

Player of the Week

Shade Cody, Rattan

Cody was almost impossible to get out in Rattan’s 4 games last week. The sophomore terrorized opposing pitchers to the tune of a .717 average with most of those hits coming with runners on base. He also terrorized opposing base runners when he was behind the plate as he picked off 3 runners.

Cody’s line: 4 G, .717 (10-14), HR, 2 2B, 8 RBI, 4 R, BB

Other nominees:

  • Braxton Hickman, Wright City: 4 G, .636 (7-11), HR, 8 RBI, 2 R (Hickman also pitched 2 scoreless innings with 4 K)
  • Justin Kelley, Wellston: .308, RBI, 5 SB

Pitcher of the Week

Easton Roby of Okarche established himself last year as one of the top pitchers around. In his first start of the 2024 Fall season, he picked up right where he left off in the Spring.

Easton Roby, Okarche

In a big first week game against Class B stalwart Calumet, Roby was dominant against the Chieftains leading Okarche to a 2-0 win.

Class B

Player of the Week

Mario Berumen, Sentinel

Sentinel quietly had a solid week last week going 3-0 with wins over Lookeba-Sickles, Blair, and Navajo. A big reason for that was the play of Mario Berumen.

In the 3 games, Berumen was on a heater at the plate, but he also had a memorable performance on the mound. Berument pitched a 5 inning no hitter vs Blair with 6 K.

Berumen’s line: G 3, .750 (6-8), 2 2B, 3B, 4 RBI

Other nominees:

  • Bartlett Patterson, Stuart: 2 G, .800 (4-5), 3 RBI, BB
  • Lane Tinsley, Big Pasture: 4 G, .615 (8-13), 4 2B, 3B, 5 RBI, BB

Pitcher of the Week

Brady Wooton, Sentinel

It is a cleen sweep for the Bulldogs in Class B as Brady Wooton was outstanding in his lone appearance this past week. Wooton got the start vs Navajo who was coming into the game at 3-0 and owning a win over 4X defending Class B State Champ, Ft Cobb-Broxton. Wooton’s performance gave the Bulldogs all they needed as they got the 3-1 win.

Wooton’s line: G 1, GS 1, 1-0, CG 7 IP, 3 H, ER, 8 K, 3 BB
