It’s hard to believe that the 2024 Fall Baseball Season is almost upon us, but that is the case as August 12 is the official start of the regular season.
Here at Sooner State Baseball Report it is our goal to provide as much coverage as we can. One way we are trying to do that is preview as many teams as we can before the start of the season.
We’ve sent out a questionnaire to many of the teams that play fall ball in hope that they will give us an honest outlook on their upcoming season. We’ve had a few responses so far.
Today’s team: Roff Tigers
Class: B
Fall 2023 Record: 13-16 (State Tournament Qualifier)
Spring 2024 Record: 18-11 ( State Tournament Qualifier)
Head Coach: Derek Collins
Head Coaching Experience: 6 (2nd year at Roff)
Returning Starter and Top Players
The Tigers will return 7 starters from the 2023-2024 season including the entire infield.
Lane McCarter is an “athletic shortstop” who was injured last fall when Roff went 13-16.
Also returning from injury is Maddux McCullar. He was injured in the Spring, but he’s “fully healthy” now.
Trey Humphries returns and is a “smooth and versatile infielder.”
Outlook
Roff was a program in transition in 2023-2024. Gone were the seniors who were part of a team that had won 7 of the last 8 combined Fall and Spring state championships. The Tigers also saw a new head coach starting in the Fall of 2023 as Derek Collins took over the healm.
The Tigers lost 8 of their first 9 games last Fall before finding their footing and going 12-7 the rest of the way and eventually sweeping both their District and Regional tournaments.
Roff looks to build on those performances this year. Coach Collins says the Tigers should be “versatile and sound” on defense while they will be looking for some to step into the starting roles in the outfield and behind the plate.
After a year where the head coach gets settled in with the program and the players, the Tigers look to get back to the state tournament this Fall and go deeper than the quarterfinal exits they had last year.
