It’s hard to believe that the 2024 Fall Baseball Season is almost upon us, but that is the case as August 12 is the official start of the regular season.
Here at Sooner State Baseball Report it is our goal to provide as much coverage as we can. One way we are trying to do that is preview as many teams as we can before the start of the season.
We’ve sent out a questionnaire to many of the teams that play fall ball in hope that they will give us an honest outlook on their upcoming season. We’ve had a few responses so far.
Today’s team: Calumet Chieftains
Class: B
Fall 2023 Record: 30-2 (Class B State Runner Up)
Spring 2024 Record: 23-4 (Class B State Runner Up)
Head Coach: Cody Thiessen
Head Coaching Experience: 8 (2 at Calumet)
Returning Starters and Top Players
The Chieftains return 5 starters off a team that finished runner-up to Ft Cobb-Broxton in both the fall and spring last year.
They are led by the Thiessen brothers. Kyler Thiessen is the senior leader who is a shortstop and pitches. He is one of the top infielders in the 2025 class an will be depended on to be a “key RBI spot in the lineup.” Kaleb Thiessen is an outfielder and pitcher for Calumet. He is a tremendous defensive player with his speed. He is a 5-tool player who will be “relied upon to jump start the offense with his gap to gap power.”
Another 5-tool type of player is Brendon Voss (INF/P). He is “one of the best underclassman in the state,” and is versatile on defense and has tremendous power at the plate.
Kingston Arnold (INF/P) will be a “major RBI player in the middle of the lineup.” He can play multiple positions on the field and will have big spot in the rotation.
Brett Reed will provide senior leadership behind the plate. Expect big power from Reed and he will be “key behind the plate” for the Chieftains in shutting down other teams on the base paths.
Outlook
Calumet has been one of the best teams in Class B over the last 2 years. There are a few question marks coming into this year as the Chieftains graduated several players last year. However, that means it gives new players the opportunity to step into those spots and show what they can do.
The Chieftains will have high end pitchers and Coach Thiessen expects to have depth there with a “great freshman class” coming in. They will also have one of the best defenses around. On offense, Calumet has great team speed and with their “high IQ players” they will put a lot of pressure on their opponents.
There may be some “question marks” in some spots, but with who the Chieftains have coming back, their combined experience, and the talent coming in, Calumet will look to continue what they’ve built in recent years: compete for a state title.
