The 2024 MLB Draft is not too far away. The draft will be 20 rounds over 3 days starting on July 14.

Once again, the Sooner State should be well represented with players that have ties to the Sooner State that will have their name called during the draft.

Leading up to the draft, we will take a look at some of the those players.

*Prospect Ranking: MLB Top 200 (MLB), ESPN Top 150 (ESPN), Perfect Game Top 500 (PG)

*When looking at the scouting grades, MLB uses a “20-80” system: 20-30 is well below average, 40 is below average, 50 is average, 60 is above average, 70-80 is well above average.

Today’s player: Garrett Shull

Shull is an Oklahoma State commit who comes out of Enid High School. He is a switch hitter who helped Enid to the last two state tournaments with a runner up finish in 2023. He was hampered by an injury in 2024.

Shull is the 3rd highest rated high school draft prospect this year and is the top position player from the Sooner State.

Draft Prospect Rankings

  • MLB – 76
  • ESPN – 120
  • PG – 139

Scouting Grades and MLB Report

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Shull will be 19 on Draft Day, which will take him out of the mix for several clubs, but some evaluators believe he has one of the highest offensive ceilings in the prep class. A physical switch-hitter with average or better tools across the board, he could factor into the second round for teams that don’t worry about age. He was more impressive on the showcase circuit last summer than he has been this spring, when he dealt with a hamstring injury.

Shull backspins balls and makes better contact as a lefty but has a less smooth stroke and more difficulty connecting as a righty. He’s strong and displays plenty of bat speed, and the ball jumps off his bat better than most. He’s a power-over-hit guy who had some swing-and-miss issues on the showcase circuit, but there are evaluators who believe in his feel for the barrel and project him as a solid or better hitter.

Built along the lines of Jarred Kelenic at 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, Shull possesses average speed and provides similar defense in right field, where he features solid arm strength. Scouts love his makeup as much as his physical ability. If he attends college at Oklahoma State, he’ll be Draft-eligible as a sophomore in 2026.

Outlook

Reading the different takes on Shull that are out there it seems that he is highly regarded as a power bat, especially from the left side.

It is interesting to hear that him being 19 on draft day is a “no-go” for some teams since he’s a high schooler. That seams to be the big “x-factor” on where he’ll be drafted. His prospect rankings put him in the 3rd-5th round range, but as we’ve seen in past drafts, the tiniest thing could cause that to slip.

If Shull decides to go to OSU, he’d be draft eligible in 2 years with his age. He could go to Stillwater and kill it and raise his draft stock even higher in 2026. With NIL in colleges now, it may not be a bad idea, but if he decides to turn pro this year, can’t blame him.
