I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. Where has the time gone? March 1 seems like it was just yesterday, but here we are in the 2nd week of May and that means it is state tournament time.
For eight teams in Class 3A, the culmination of tons of blood, sweat, and tears comes down to Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
We’ve got some familiar faces in the 3A bracket this year and some new faces. Salina, Perry, Heritage Hall, and Washington were all a part of the field in 2023 with the Warriors winning the last two state titles. Silo is going for their 6th straight Spring title, but the previous 5 were all in Class 2A. Mount St Mary is making their first trip to State since 1988 (from what I could find) and it I can’t find anywhere where Community Christian has made it to State ever.
Let’s take a look at each of the teams.
Team Capsules
- Salina Wildcats (30-9): Number of state titles: 1 (1992); Last state appearance: 2023; District 3A-5 Champion (14-0); Record vs 3A: 19-0
- Community Christian Royals (24-9): Number of state titles: 0; Last state appearance: N/A; District 3A-3 2nd Place (10-2); Record vs 3A: 15-3
- Perry Maroons (35-6): Number of state titles: 0; Last state appearance: 2023; District 3A-4 Champion (12-0); Record vs 3A: 19-0
- Heritage Hall (25-5): Number of state titles: 4 (’95, ’15, ’16, ’21); Last state appearance: 2023; District 3A-3 Champion (11-1); Record vs 3A: 18-1
- Washington Warriors (31-4): Number of state titles: 2 (’22, ’23); Last state appearance: 2023; District 3A-1 2nd Place (11-1); Record vs 3A: 21-3
- Silo Rebels (25-8): Number of state titles: 20 (13 in Spring including the last 6 – 2A titles; 7 Fall); Last state appearance: 2023 (2A); District 3A-8 Champion (12-2); Record vs 3A: 17-4
- Mount St Mary Rockets (22-9): Number of state titles: 1 (’88); Last state appearance: 1988; District 3A-2 2nd Place (10-2); Record vs 3A: 16-3
- Lone Grove Longhorns (31-5): Number of state titles: 2 (Spring ’74, Fall ’72); Last state appearance: 2021; District 3A-1 Champion (11-1); Record vs 3A: 19-1
Matchups
Salina vs Community Christian, 11:00 a.m.
I’ll be honest, when the coaches rankings came out after Regionals to seed the Areas, I was a little shocked that Salina got the #1 seed with 9 losses. However, after looking at the big picture, 5 of those 9 losses came to 6A competition and another 2 against 4A foes. The Wildcats are a perfect 19-0 against 3A competition and have outscored those opponents 193-15.
CCS is making it’s first trip to the state tournament and as a reward they get to face the #1 team. However, don’t count out the Royals. They are the only team in the bracket that won their Areas on the road.
CCS also has a pair of really good pitchers with Elijah Williams being one of the top pitchers in the 2026 class and regardless of class.
Perry vs Heritage Hall, 1:30 p.m.
The Maroons come into this game technically as the lower seed, but don’t let that fool you. Perry is one of only 2 teams in the field that is undefeated in Class 3A games. The Maroons have played a tough schedule that included wins over 6A teams Yukon and Sand Springs (who is in the 6A State Tournament). Couple that with their experience from being at State last year, the Maroons are going to be a tough out.
Heritage Hall played one of the toughest schedules out there and to be honest, I though they would’ve been the #1 seed. Their only 3A loss was to CCS and the aforementioned Elijah Williams on the mound. The Chargers had a stretch where they beat Silo, Washington, and Oktaha to win the Bo Duren Tournament in the middle of April.
Washington vs Silo, 4:00 p.m.
The Warriors are the 2 time defending champions and for most of the year they’ve played like they are going for the 3 peat. They started the season with wins over Mount St Mary, Ft Cobb-Broxton, and Marlow in their first 3 games and the rest of the season they had wins over Lone Grove and CCS among others. Washington also went and undefeated 4-0 at the Gulf Shores Classic over Spring Break.
The Warriors’ 4 losses included a close game at Tuttle, Mount St Mary, and losses to Heritage Hall and Lone Grove on the same day.
Add all that up along with the postseason experience from the last 2 years, the Warriors are one of the favorites.
Silo has made a successful jump to Class 3A after dominating 2A the last several years.
The Rebels had some hiccups over the last few weeks due to personnel issues, but they seem to have figured it out before the postseason going 5-0 in the postseason so far and outscoring their opponents 51-4.
While the Rebels’ program has plenty of postseason experience, this group is relatively young. Will Silo be able to overcome that youth and relative inexperience?
Lone Grove Longhorns vs Mount St Mary
The Longhorns come into the State Tournament as one of only four schools in 3A that has at least 30 wins. Lone Grove is tied with Washington with 31 (Perry has 35).
At times this year, the Longhorns have had a penchant for playing close game and lost some of those to teams that you wouldn’t think they should lose to. Having said that, Lone Grove would be used to playing close games and they would be use to it.
Mount St Mary may be tied with the most losses of any team in the field, but don’t let that fool you. The Rockets have played an extremely tough schedule. Their losses include games to 6A Norman, top 4A teams Chickasha, Newcastle, and Elk City, Dale, and Washington. However, the Rockets have wins over Washington, Ft Cobb-Broxton, and Marlow.
Word is that along with their ace Parker Hayes, their pitching depth will be added to with the return of some injured pitchers.
