It’s a huge week across the state. The final district series of the season are happening at the high school level, Seminole State and Connors State are dead even at the top of the Region 2 standings with one conference series to go, and MACU and USAO are the final two teams alive in the SAC conference race. There are plenty of big games going on across the state to keep you entertained, so let’s take a closer look at some of the best ones.
Matchup of the week (College) – OU vs Texas
Should it count since I’ve tried to make this an exclusively small school-centered weekly series? Probably not. Do I care? I do not. It’s one of the biggest rivalries in college sports, and this is a rare occasion where the Sooners are likely the favorites to win the series over the Longhorns. The Sooners have a three-game lead over the three-way tie of teams in second place, including the Longhorns. The Sooners’ offense has looked somewhere between elite and unstoppable in the past few weeks, scoring double-digit runs in eight of eleven games since the start of April. Still, the pitching staff will have to hold up their end of the deal better this weekend if they’re going to continue their hot streak.
Top Sooner State Showdown (College) – Western OK vs NOC Enid
With two series remaining at the D2 level of JUCO, this battle of third and fourth-place teams in Region 2 is the de facto deciding series regarding which of these two teams stays alive in the conference race. Across the state’s eastern border, the first and second-place teams, Arkansas Mountain Home and Rich Mountain will play a series of their own, with the best-case scenario being a 2-1 series win for UA Rich Mountain if the two representatives of Oklahoma want to maximize their chances of taking home the regular season crown.
Where I’ll be this week – Edmond North vs Edmond Santa Fe
It doesn’t get much better than the top two teams in a district battling it out in the final district series of the season. Add to that the fact that it’s a matchup between crosstown rivals with (likely) two D1 arms on the mound, and you’ve got all the pieces of one of the season’s biggest games. These teams have already clinched a hosting spot in regionals, but they’ll both be fighting to create more favorable matchups in their regionals. North needs a sweep to win the district after they took their first district loss against Deer Creek last week. Santa Fe comes into the series with a perfect 12-0 record in district play, however, they were swept by Yukon earlier in the season in a series that Yukon was later forced to forfeit. The Wolves need just one win today or tomorrow to clinch a district win in new head coach Kris Webb’s first year at the helm.
