During the 2023 high school season, SSBR started a high school “Dominant Dozen” rankings. These rankings were meant to showcase who was thought to be the best teams in the state relative to their classification.

Does that mean we think that a class A team can consistently beat several 6A teams? Some could, but the depth at the higher classes is seemingly higher and there are more stronger teams the higher the class you go.

*That is not to take anything away from small school baseball. There are SEVERAL small schools playing baseball at a high level. Seriously, we love small school ball – just look at our Fall Ball coverage.

Last year’s rankings were done as a one man show. This year they are done by committee and use a points system (1st place = 12 pts, 2nd place = 11 pts, etc). That is why you may see ties.

For the first week’s rankings we looked at results + what we think the potential of the teams are. As we go forward, it will be all about the results.

One thing we are now seeing is the margins are razor thin. It may not seem fair for teams to drop with only one loss during the week, but we have to look at who everyone plays and the quality of wins/losses and just not number of wins.

And as always, this is for fun so please take it that way.

Teams That Dropped Out

Bixby (Prev: 4): Last week: 2-3; Washington (Prev: 5): Last week: 2-2; Silo (PR: 10): Last week: 1-2

This Week’s Dozen

Choctaw (6A, 21-1) strengthens their hold on #1 going 5-0 last week with a district sweep over Edmond Memorial and 3-0 against 6A teams at the BA/Bixby Turf War.

Heritage Hall (3A,18-2) goes from being unranked to #2 on the strength of of winning the Bo Duren Invitational being 3 SSBR ranked teams (Silo, Washington, Oktaha).

Oktaha (2A, 20-3) drops a spot after losing in the finals against Heritage Hall.

Much like Heritage Hall, Dale (2A, 15-4) leaps into the rankings after being unranked. The Pirates have won 11 in a row with wins over North Rock Creek (4A), Mount St Mary (3A), Tuttle (4A), Piedmont (6A), and Elgin (5A) in the Bill Tipton Classic championship this past Saturday.

Elgin (5A, 21-3) lost to Dale in the Bill Tipton Classic finals but went 5-0 the rest of the week including a win over Piedmont.

Owasso (6A, 24-5) comes back into the rankings after going 5-0 this week and being 10-0 in June. They run ruled Tuttle in the Nike/Pro-Nine on Saturday.

Tuttle (4A, 25-4) won four games last week, but drop with losses to Dale at home and the aforementioned Owasso game.

The rest of the teams in the rankings either went undefeated in a short week of games or lost a game.
