With it being our 2nd season here at Sooner State Baseball Report, we are trying some new things out to make our coverage even better. One of those things is awarding a Player of the Week and a Pitcher of the Week for the various levels. Each week we will send out a nomination form to each head coach and we will pick from those nominations.

We have awards in the small college division (NCAA D2, NAIA, NCCAA) and the junior college division.

Here are your winners for the week.

Small College

Player of the Week

Victor Sanchez (INF), Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles

OK Wesleyan is having a tremendous season sitting atop the KCAC standings at 23-3 (29-9 overall). A big part of the Eagles’ success has been 3B Victor Sanchez. Through the Eagles’ 38 games, Sanchez is batting .459 with 16 HR and 66 RBI.

Sanchez was even better this past week in the Eagles’ 4 games – all wins against conference opponents.

Sanchez’ line: .611/.696/1.44 (OPS 2.14), 5 HR, 19 RBI (!), 5 BB, 11 R

Other nominees:

  • Wyatt Grant, Cameron University: .353 (6-17), 4 HR, 2B, 8 RBI, BB, 5 R
  • Christopher Martinez, USAO: .563 (9-16), 2 HR, 2B, 3B, 10 RBI, 3 BB, 6 R (SAC Player of the Week)
  • Trevor Saire, NWOSU: .611 (11-18), 2 HR, 2 2B, 6 RBI, 4 R

Pitcher of the Week

Garrett DeHass (RHP), NWOSU Rangers

This is the 2nd SSBR Pitcher of the Week award that DeHass has earned this season. In his win over ECU, DeHass had some electric stuff.

DeHass’ line: (W), 8 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 10 K, 0 BB

Other nominees:

  • Josh Doerr, OPSU: (W) 5.2 IP, 5H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 3 BB
  • Josh Martinez, Cameron: G 2, 3.2 IP, 3 H, ER, 7 K, 0 BB
  • Brian Ereu, USAO: (W) 6 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 5 K, 2 BB
  • Zane Robeaux, MACU: (W) CG 7 IP, 5 H, ER, 6 K, 0 BB (moves into 3rd place MACU career strike outs)

Junior College

Player of the Week

Noah Smallwood (INF), Seminole State Trojans

For the 2nd week in a row, a Trojan has won the Player of the Week. This week it is Noah Smallwood. The Owasso native had an incredible week for the Trojans as Seminole State went undefeated (the Trojans have won 8 in a row as of Monday).

Smallwood’s line: .818 (9-11), HR, 2 2B, 3B, 11 RBI, 7 R, BB

Other nominees:

  • Easton Ford, Redlands CC: .600 (9-15), 2 HR, 10 RBI, 2 BB, 4 R

Pitcher of the Week

Carson Abbot (RHP), Redlands CC

It has been a disappointing season so far for the Cougars. Last week, however, Redlands went 4-1 on the week including their first conference series win of the season against NOC Tonkawa.

That series win may not have happened if it wasn’t for Abbot’s performance in game 3. Entering the game out of the bullpen in the 3rd inning and and with Redlands down a run, Abbot pitched 5 solid innings to allow the Cougars to come back and win the game and the series.

Abbot’s line: (W) 5 IP, 6 H, ER, 7 K, 0 BB

Other nominees: NONE

Can we give recommendations? Please check out varsity pitcher Tristan (Bandit) Thomas for next pitcher of the week. He has 5-0 record for Victory Christian School.

    Thx. Gary

    1. These are just for small college and JUCOs. We aren’t doing players/pitchers of the week for high schools. That may be something we look to do after this Spring season.
