When Sooner State Baseball Report started last year, we tried to find different and fun content about baseball in the Sooner State that we thought people would enjoy. One of the ways we did that was to start ranking the 30 different college teams in the state. And that’s how the Power 10 was “born.”
Each week until the postseason, we will rank what we think are the 10 best teams in the state relative to their level. We will look at the results of each team based on the level of their competition compared to the other teams in the state.
Does that mean if a junior college team is ranked ahead of an NCAA D1 team we think that JUCO would be the D1? No it doesn’t. But it does mean we think that the JUCO team is playing better than the D1 at their respective levels.
Here is where we think things stand right now (through games on Apr 7).
Please remember this is for fun and should be treated as such.
Teams Dropping Out
None
Teams Receiving Consideration
Seminole State (NJCAA D1)
10. OCU Stars (NAIA), 24-13
PR: 8
As you go through the rankings this week, you’ll see several teams drop a spot or two even though they had a winning record and won their series. OCU is the first one.
The Stars went 2-1 winning their series with Southwestern Christian. It was close to a 3 game sweep of the Eagles, but SCU squeezed by the Stars 9-8 in game 1 on Friday night.
OCU is 8-3 in their last 11 games and sit tied for 2nd in the SAC with USAO.
This week: Thurs at USAO; Sat at USAO (DH)
9. USAO Drovers (NAIA), 24-12
PR: 9
Speaking of USAO, the Drovers stay put at #9 after sweeping Wayland Baptist for sixth time in the last seven seasons.
USAO is 9-2 in their last 11 games.
This week: Thurs vs OCU; Sat vs OCU (DH)
8. Oklahoma State Cowboys (NCAA D1), 21-11
PR: 10
The Pokes went 3-1 last week including a series win over rival, OU, in the Bedlam series.
From this week’s “Five Things…”
The Cowboys on the other hand, are 10-3 in their last 13 games and have won their last 3 Big 12 series. They are winning with pitching and defense which is a difference from the recent past. When their big bats get healthy and get going, the Pokes could be a team to watch and be a regional host.
This week: Tues at Wichita State; Fri-Sun vs Cincinnati
7. NOC Enid (NJCAA D2), 27-12
PR: 5
The Jets are another one of the teams this week that had a winning record and a series win yet dropped a couple of spots.
While the Jets have won their last 2 Region 2 series, they are 5-6 in their last 11. That 13 game winning streak is getting farther and farther in the rear view mirror.
However, NOC Enid still leads the Region 2 D2 standings.
This week: Mon vs NWOSU JV (DH); Thurs at Redlands; Sat at Redlands (DH)
6. NWOSU Rangers (NCAA D2), 26-12
PR: 7
From this week’s “Five Things…”
Northwestern OK State has exceeded preseason expectations this year. The Rangers were picked to finish 10th in the preseason GAC poll. They just swept Southern Nazarene this weekend to run their conference record to 16-8 and 26-12 overall.
With the results around the conference this past weekend, the Rangers are currently in a tie for 1st place in the conference standings.
This week: Tues vs SNU (at David Allen Park, Enid); Fri-Sat vs Arkansas-Monticello
5. Connors State Cowboys (NJCAA D1), 34-6
PR: 4
The Cowboys are another squad that had a winning week and won a series but still dropped. Connors went 2-1 on the week winning their series vs NEO with game 1 being played in ONEOK Field in Tulsa.
This week: Mon vs Carl Albert State; Thur at Eastern; Sat vs Eastern (DH)
4. Western OK State Pioneers (NJCAA D2), 28-11
PR: 3
The Pioneers went 3-1 last week including a series win over Murray State. Western has now won all 6 of their Region 2 series on the season and sit in 2nd place, 1 game behind NOC Enid.
This week: Tues at Rose State; Fri-Sat at Carl Albert State
3. UCO Bronchos (NCAA D2), 29-9
PR: 1
After spending the last 3 week at #1, UCO falls out of the top spot after going 2-2 last week including a series loss at #9 Missouri Southern.
The Bronchos are still in 3rd place in the tough MIAA behind #3 Central Missouri and the aforementioned Missouri Southern.
This week: Tues vs NSU; Fri-Sun vs Rogers State
2. OK Wesleyan Eagles (NAIA), 28-11
PR 6
The Eagles make a jump up to #2 this week after going 4-0 with all 4 being conference games.
OKWU has won 6 games in a row and it is a good thing too. Kansas Wesleyan is only 1.5 games back of OKWU and riding an 18 game winning streak.
This week: Tues vs Evangel; Fri-Sat vs McPherson
1. MACU Evangels (NAIA), 29-9
PR: 2
MACU is the new #1 this week. A consistent presence in the Power 10 since last year, the Evangels saw their 14 game winning streak snapped on Saturday, but they have been playing the best baseball in the state for a few weeks now.
The Evangels sit atop the SAC standings 3.5 games ahead of OCU and USAO (two teams they own series wins over) and a full 4 games over Texas Wesleyan.
MACU has their SAC off weekend coming up this week but it doesn’t mean they are taking it easy. They play #15 MidAmerica Nazarene in OKC.
This week: Fri-Sat vs MidAmerica Nazarene
