This week we look at the ramifications of the Bedlam series, a couple of teams from the Sooner State that sit atop their conference, and a high school team entrenches itself as it’s classification’s #1 team.

1. OSU wins Bedlam and the ramifications

If you’re a baseball fan in the state of Oklahoma, you were most likely aware that the Bedlam series was in Stillwater this past weekend. You probably also know that OSU won the series over OU 2-1.

Coming out of the weekend, the Sooners still stand in a tie for 1st in the Big 12 standings with West Virginia at 8-4 while OSU is tied for 3rd with Kansas State, Cincinnati, and Texas one game behind at 7-5.

The thing is OSU is in a much better place right now than OU. The Sooners did win a game in the series this weekend, but they allowed at least 9 runs in each of the 3 games. This continues a trend the Sooners have been on the last few weeks of bad pitching and bad defense. Just on Sunday alone, Sooner pitching allowed 13 free bases: 11 by walk, 1 HBP, and 1 wild pitch. That is not a path to winning baseball.

The Cowboys on the other hand, are 10-3 in their last 13 games and have won their last 3 Big 12 series. They are winning with pitching and defense which is a difference from the recent past. When their big bats get healthy and get going, the Pokes could be a team to watch and be a regional host.

2. The Rangers are in 1st place in the GAC

Northwestern OK State has exceeded preseason expectations this year. The Rangers were picked to finish 10th in the preseason GAC poll. They just swept Southern Nazarene this weekend to run their conference record to 16-8 and 26-12 overall.

With the results around the conference this past weekend, the Rangers are currently in a tie for 1st place in the conference standings.

NWOSU hosts Arkansas-Monticello this weekend where the Rangers are 18-3 in Alva so far this weekend. A series win is a must for NWOSU before heading into Magnolia, AR next weekend vs Southern Arkansas.

3. The Trojans are getting hot

Don’t look now, but one of the most storied programs in the state is finding their groove. Seminole State is currently on a 7 game winning streak after back to back weekend series wins. Their record is currently 24-13.

The Trojans also find themselves only 1 game back in the Region 2 standings behind rival Connors State.

The road definitely isn’t easy for SSC as they host Dallas-Brookhaven today and Cowley CC tomorrow before their 3 game series with NEO this weekend.

4. MACU is still the top dog in the SAC

Usually a team is coming off a series win that has been leading their conference for several weeks doesn’t get a mention in this space. However, when that team just had just had a 15 game winning streak and lead the conference by 3.5 games with just 2 conference series left, they get a mention.

The Evangels had their 15 game (2nd longest in Oklahoma this year) snapped on Saturday, but if you ask the team and Coach Stanton, they should be sitting at 16.

More importantly though, the Evangels sit in 1st place ahead of OCU and USAO who are tied at 2nd and Texas Wesleyan who is 4 games back.

5. Oktaha wins the Hilldale/Ft Gibson Tournament in a wild one.

Class 2A’s Oktaha Tigers may just be the most dominant team relative to their classification. Here is what was said about the Tigers in yesterday’s write up on the Dominant Dozen

In a rankings that emphasizes what teams do relative to their classification, Oktaha may be the most dominant so far.

The Tigers are 12-2 against teams in higher classifications with their losses to Carl Albert and Edmond North. They are 4-0 vs 2A and A competition.

Oktaha won the Hilldale/Ft Gibson this weekend coming from behind and walking it off in extras vs a really good Rattan team.

In the championship game against Class A State title contender, Rattan, the Tigers had to come back from deficits of 4-0, 5-3, and 12-8 before walking it off in the 8th inning.
