With it being our 2nd season here at Sooner State Baseball Report, we are trying some new things out to make our coverage even better. One of those things is awarding a Player of the Week and a Pitcher of the Week for the various levels. Each week we will send out a nomination form to each head coach and we will pick from those nominations.
We have awards in the small college division (NCAA D2, NAIA, NCCAA) and the junior college division.
Here are your winners for the week.
*Before we get started, this may have been the best field of candidates we’ve had so far this season. It was difficult to pick just one in most cases.
Small College
Player of the Week
Spencer Dickinson (3B), Oklahoma Baptist Bison
The junior from Saipan is having himself a really good season overall batting .328, 8 HR, 33 RBI. However, this past week was the best week Dickinson has had so far this season.
Dickinson had double digit RBI in the four games the Bison played.
Dickinson’s line: 4 G, .529 (9-17), 4 HR, 2B, 11 RBI, 8 R
Other nominees:
- Christopher Martinez, USAO: 3 G, .400 (4-10), 3 2B, RBI, BB, R
- Kyle Williams, MACU: 4 G, .417 (5-12), HR, 2B, 6 RBI, 2R
Pitcher of the Week
Racer Felter (RHP), UCO Bronchos
It’s not often we see a relief pitcher get nominated for the award, much less nominated, but when you have a week like Felter did, it gets noticed.
The righty had 3 games out of the pen for the Bronchos last week and 2 of those times Felter came in with the Bronchos trailing by 2 runs. He pitched a total of 6.2 innings in those games holding his opponents scoreless allowing UCO to come back and win those games.
Felter’s line: 3 G, 2-0, 7.2 IP, H, 0 R, 9 K
Other nominees:
- Jackson Phillips, SWOSU: CG 7 IP (W), 2 H, 0 R, 6 K, BB
- Devan Quesada, MACU: CG 7 IP (W), H, 0 R, 7 K, 3 BB
- Brian Ereu, USAO:
5.2 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 K, BB
Junior College
Pitcher of the Week
Fabian Hernandez (LHP), Western OK State Pioneers
Looking across the JUCO games last week, it was easy to see why the nominees for Pitcher of the Week were scarce. However, this writer had the advantage of seeing one who should’ve been nominated.
Fabian Hernandez of Western OK State had an outstanding game vs Redlands in game 1 of their double header on Saturday. He scattered 8 hits allowing only 1 run. The key was he kept the mistakes to a minimum not walking anyone and hitting only one batter.
Hernandez’ line: CG (W), 7 IP, 8 H, ER, 4 K, 0 BB
Other nominee:
- Aaron Baker, NOC Enid:
5.2 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 3 BB (3 hitless innings in relief vs NOC Tonkawa)
Player of the Week
Caden Powell (INF), Seminole State Trojans
We saved the best for last.
From this week’s “Five Things You Should Know:”
Rarely do we see a player have a game where we say, “I’ve never seen that before.” Well, we had one last week.
Caden Powell of Seminole State (and Clinton Red Tornado alum) had himself a game on Friday at ASU Three Rivers that (even I think he’d say) he’ll never have again.
You read that right. Powell had six hits with all of them extra base hits – 4 HRs, 2B, and 3B with 16 RBI!
I found the NJCAA record book to see if that was a record, but it doesn’t show single game records (only career or season). Regardless, it was a game that will probably not be matched for a very long time, if ever.
Powell’s line: .737 (14-19), 5 HR, 2 2B, 2 3B, 21 RBI, BB, 11 R
Other nominees:
- Zeb Henry, Eastern OK State: .562 (9-16), 3 2B, 5 R, 3 SB
- Rhen Rutledge, Carl Albert State: .727 (8-11), HR, 2 2B, 9 RBI, 3 BB, HBP, 6 R
- Cooper Smith, NOC Enid: .538 (7-13), 2 HR, 2 2B, 5 RBI, 7 BB, 8 R
- Easton Ford, Redlands: .727 (8-11), HR, 3 2B, 4 RBI, BB, 4 R
