What a wild week it was with plenty of intrastate matchups, but a few teams have further shown they are top level teams while a player had a game that is in rarified air.

1. Have a day Caden Powell!

Rarely do we see a player have a game where we say, “I’ve never seen that before.” Well, we had one last week.

Caden Powell of Seminole State (and Clinton Red Tornado alum) had himself a game on Friday at ASU Three Rivers that (even I think he’d say) he’ll never have again.

You read that right. Powell had six hits with all of them extra base hits – 4 HRs, 2B, and 3B with 16 RBI!

I found the NJCAA record book to see if that was a record, but it doesn’t show single game records (only career or season). Regardless, it was a game that will probably not be matched for a very long time, if ever.

For the week Powell hit .737 (14-19), 5 HR, 2 2B, 2 3B, 21 RBI, BB, 11 R

2. MACU Tightens Their Grip on the SAC

The Evangels had themselves a heck of a week last week going 4-0 including a 10-1 win over OK Wesleyan that was called in the 5th inning. They also swept Wayland Baptist to run their winnings streak to 12.

MACU is currently in 1st place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings at 13-2. They are ahead of 2nd place OCU (and own the tiebreaker) who are at 8-4 and Texas Wesleyan who is 9-6.

The Evangels host SW Assemblies of God this weekend who just beat OCU 2-1 in their series.

3. UCO Moves Up the MIAA Standings

The Bronchos went a perfect 4-0 last week with all 4 coming against MIAA foes. They beat NSU on Tuesday and swept Emporia State over the weekend.

UCO has now moved into 3rd place in the MIAA standings 4 games back of Central Missouri but only 1 game back of Missouri Southern who the Bronchos face this coming weekend in Joplin (after a home game vs SNU this Tuesday).

4. NOC Enid Wins the “Battle of the North”

NOC Enid and NOC Tonkawa played the first of 2 – 3 game series this past weekend, and it was the Jets who won the series 2-1 after sweeping the double header in Enid on Saturday. Enid scored 10 runs in each game on Saturday to win the twin bill.

This kept the Jets in 1st place overall in the D2 Region 2 standings ahead of UA Rich Mountain (11-3) and Western (11-4).

As the 2nd “go around” for the teams in Oklahoma starts this week, the standings for the Sooner State schools are:

  • NOC Enid (12-3)
  • Western (11-4)
  • Carl Albert (8-7)
  • Tonkawa (8-7)
  • Murray State (4-10)
  • Redlands (1-13)

*Carl Albert has the tiebreaker over Tonkawa after sweeping them 2 weeks ago.

5. Dewar and Preston Only Undefeateds Left

We are at the official/unofficial halfway point in the high school season and we have 2 undefeated teams left – the Dewar Dragons in Class A and the Preston Pirates in 2A.

Dewar is currently at 16-0 and is coming off a week that saw them beat Class B’s #5 team Stuart twice by a combined score of 17-1, beat 2 – 2A teams and win the Weleetka Tournament with a combined score of 36-1 in 3 games.

Preston is 11-0 and is coming off a 3-0 week that saw them beat a solid 4A squad in Oologah.

These 2 teams were supposed to meet up today (Monday), but that game has been postponed (no make up date is currently known as of this writing).
