Spring break has come and gone, which means it’s officially go time for baseball teams across the state. This is when we start to separate the contenders and pretenders from each other in the standings, and we’ll be here to cover all of it for you every step of the way. Click here for a quick breakdown of some of the biggest stories from the past week, and let’s get into what to watch this week.
Matchup of the week (College) – Mid-America Christian vs Wayland Baptist
Not only does MACU have a midweek showdown with OK Wesleyan that likely finds itself as the in-state matchup of the week nearly any other week of the season, but they then have a weekend conference matchup with a Wayland Baptist squad that’s right on their heels, tied for second in the SAC standings. Wayland Baptist has a fairly unassuming overall record of 17-13, but a hot 7-2 start against SAC competition makes this a must-win series for MACU as they try to hold onto their top spot in the standings.
Top Sooner State Showdown (College) – NOC Enid vs NOC Tonkawa
One of the most anticipated in-state matchups of the year is finally here, and the stakes have only gotten higher since the season began. NOC Enid sits atop Region 2 with a 23-9 record, while Tonkawa isn’t far behind with a 23-11 record to their name. To add another layer to the rivalry, former NOC Tonkawa head coach Ryan Bay is now the head coach of the Jets, and this matchup will mark his first rendezvous with his former squad since the move. With so many storylines to follow, there’s no doubt all eyes will be on Northern Oklahoma this weekend.
Where I’ll be this week – Owasso vs Moore
Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Owasso is a contender to win the 6A state title this year. Led by one of the best pitching staffs in the state, headlined by Arkansas commit Jackson Farrell who has given up a grand total of one earned run through 20 IP this season, racking up 38 strikeouts along the way. On the flip side, I’m not sure many people outside of Moore, Oklahoma thought the Lions would look this good early on. The Lions have jumped out to an 8-3 record, and have split their first two district series against Bartlesville and Sand Springs. Perhaps the biggest storyline of Moore’s season thus far has been the emergence of senior Cooper Howe as a true ace of this Lions’ staff, only giving up one earned run as well through 14 IP, with 17 strikeouts of his own. This one should be a classic pitcher’s duel, and we couldn’t be more excited to cover it for you.
