When Sooner State Baseball Report started last year, we tried to find different and fun content about baseball in the Sooner State that we thought people would enjoy. One of the ways we did that was to start ranking the 30 different college teams in the state. And that’s how the Power 10 was “born.”
Each week until the postseason, we will rank what we think are the 10 best teams in the state relative to their level. We will look at the results of each team based on the level of their competition compared to the other teams in the state.
Does that mean if a junior college team is ranked ahead of an NCAA D1 team we think that JUCO would be the D1? No it doesn’t. But it does mean we think that the JUCO team is playing better than the D1 at their respective levels.
Here is where we think things stand right now (through games on Mar 17).
Please remember this is for fun and should be treated as such.
Teams Dropped From The Power 10
- Oklahoma State Cowboys (Prev 9): Went 2-2 last week losing Big 12 series to UCF
- SWOSU Bulldogs (Prev 10): Swept by Harding
10. Oklahoma City Stars (18-10), NAIA
Previous: NR
The Stars reappear in the SSBR Power 10 after dropping out last week. OCU went on the road for a SAC series at OK Panhandle State in Goodwell, OK last week and took care of business against the Aggies by sweeping them. The Stars outscored OPSU 32-6.
This week: Fri-Sat at Texas Wesleyan (3 game series)
9. NWOSU Rangers (18-9), NCAA D2
Previous: 6
NWOSU went 2-2 last week winning their series vs Arkansas Tech, 2-1. The other loss on the week came to NAIA, OPSU at home.
The Rangers keep living dangerously as the 2 wins over ATU were both by scores of 3-2. One came by a walk off and the other they held on as the Wonder Boys scored runs in the 8th and 9th to close it to one run.
This week: Tues at Emporia State; Fri-Sat at Harding (3 game series)
8. Western Oklahoma State Pioneers (18-9), NJCAA D2
Previous: NR
Western makes their 2024 debut in the Power 10 coming off a 2-1 series win over NOC Tonkawa. The Pioneers did go 2-2 last week with a loss at Rose State in the midweek.
WOSC currently sits in 3rd place in the Oklahoma division of the Region 2 standings and are comfortably ahead of the 4th place team.
This week: Tues at Seminole State; Fri-Sat at NOC Enid (3 game series)
7. MACU Evangels (16-8), NAIA
Previous: 8
From this week’s “Five Things”
The Sooner Athletic Conference has 9 teams so that means once conference season starts, one of the teams will not be playing a conference series. Through the first 3 weeks, MACU has played 3 conference series, won all 3 of them, swept Central Christian (like they should), and sit at 7-2 after 9 games.
That record puts them in 2nd place officially, but the “leader” Wayland Baptist has played only 6 games against the bottom 2 teams and are 5-1.
Not only that, MACU is a top eleven team overall in the team strength ratings and they have the 2nd toughest schedule in the nation. Makes that 16-8 record look pretty ok doesn’t it?
This week: Tues vs SNU; Fri-Sat at OPSU (3 game series)
6. NOC Tonkawa Mavericks (22-8), NJCAA D2
Previous: 3
The Mavericks went 3-2 last week and lost their first conference series on the season to Western, 1-2. The other 2 wins came against a post grad from Minnesota.
Tonkawa sits in 2nd place in the Oklahoma division of Region 2.
This week: Tues at Rose State; Fri-Sat vs Carl Albert State (3 game series)
5. Connors State Cowboys (24-4), NJCAA D1
Previous: 1
The Cowboys lost their hold on the #1 spot after having it for 3 weeks. Connors went 2-2 last week losing to Crowder and Seminole St in the first game of their series.
Connors has gone 4-4 in their last 8 games after starting 20-0.
This week: Mon at OC JV (DH); Thurs vs UA Three Rivers (DH); Sat vs DFW Post Grad
4. Oklahoma Sooners (13-6), NCAA D1
Previous: 5
From this week’s “Five Things”
What looked like it could be a bad week after getting stomped by OSU on Tuesday turned into a great week when the Sooners went into Ft Worth and swept one of the preseason favorites in the Big 12, TCU.
OU did it multiple ways over the weekend: come backs, timely hitting, and great pitching. It was an exciting weekend of baseball by the Sooners.
OU sits a full 2 games ahead in the Big 12 standings after this weekend and they are the only undefeated team currently in the conference.
This week: Tues vs Dallas Baptist; Fri-Sun vs West Virginia (3 game series)
3. Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles (19-8), NAIA
Previous: 7
OKWU continues it’s fast rise up the standings after not being ranked until last week.
From this week’s “Five Things”
Last week we brought your attention to the fact that the Eagles had gone on a nice run and were in 1st place in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. One week later, we’re glad to inform you that they are still in 1st place and have a bigger lead than this time last week.
OKWU played 2nd place Tabor in a double header last Tuesday in which they split with the Blue Jays and snapped Tabor’s 13 game winning streak.
Then OKWU hosted 3rd place Avila and they swept the Eagles and thanks to a loss by Tabor the Eagles now have a 2 game lead in the standings.
This week: Tues at Tabor; Fri-Sat at Sterling (3 game series)
2. NOC Enid Jets (22-7), NJCAA D2
Previous: 4
NOC Enid also continues their climb up the rankings after going 5-1 last week.
That record included a 3 game sweep over Murray State. The Jets are currently 9-0 in conference and sit at the top of the standings.
This week: Fri-Sat at Western OK State (3 game series)
1. UCO Bronchos (22-5), NCAA D2
Previous: 2
From this week’s “Five Things”
The hottest team in the Sooner State is the UCO Bronchos. They’ve won their last 7 games including 2 conference sweeps vs Newman and a good Fort Hays State team. UCO outscored the Tigers by an average of 8-2 over the 3 games.
The Bronchos currently sit in a tie for 3rd in the MIAA and have a 3 game series at Pittsburg State (who they are tied with) this coming weekend.
This week: Fri-Sun at Pittsburg State (3 game series)
