During the 2023 high school season, SSBR started a high school “Dominant Dozen” rankings. These rankings were meant to showcase who was thought to be the best teams in the state relative to their classification.
Does that mean we think that a class A team can consistently beat several 6A teams? Some could, but the depth at the higher classes is seemingly higher and there are more stronger teams the higher the class you go.
*That is not to take anything away from small school baseball. There are SEVERAL small schools playing baseball at a high level. Seriously, we love small school ball – just look at our Fall Ball coverage.
Last year’s rankings were done as a one man show. This year they are done by committee and use a points system (1st place = 12 pts, 2nd place = 11 pts, etc). That is why you may see ties.
For the first week’s rankings we looked at results + what we think the potential of the teams are. As we go forward, it will be all about the results.
And as always, this is for fun so please take it that way.
Teams That Dropped Out
Edmond Santa Fe (PR 3), Last week 1-3; Tushka (PR T4), Last week 2-1; Sand Springs (PR T6), Last week 2-1; Collinsville (PR T10), Last week 3-2; Blanchard (PR T10), Last week 1-3
Teams Receiving Votes (In Alphabetical Order)
Calera Bulldogs (2A), 5-0; Hilldale Hornets (4A); Tushka Tigers (A)
12. Calumet Chieftans (B), 3-0
Previous: NR
The Chieftans enter this week’s rankings after finally getting their season started and going 3-0 including an 8-2 win over 4A Clinton.
Calumet made the Class B Fall State Championship game losing ot Ft Cobb-Broxton. The Mustangs have struggled a little bit coming out of the gate, and the Chieftans may be the team to give FCB a real challenge for the title.
This week: Sat: vs Oklahoma Christian School (Edmond Spring Break Festival); Sat vs Midwest City (Edmond Spring Break Festival)
11. Edmond North Huskies (6A), 7-1
Previous: 6
Edmond North had a good week last week going 3-1 including a district sweep over Norman High. However, losing just one game this early in the season could mean a big drop in the rankings.
The Huskies lost to an upstart Moore HS team on Friday, but their resume is just enough to keep them in the “Dozen.”
This week: Thurs: vs Mount St Mary; Fri: vs Midwest City; Fri: vs Metro Christian; Sat: vs Oktaha (all games part of Edmond Spring Break Festival)
10. Silo Rebels (3A), 5-0
Previous: 12
Silo went 3-0 last week dominating every game. The Rebels have dominated every game so far as their schedule has been “light” on higher level teams.
This week: Sat vs Hugo
9. Okataha Tigers (2A), 5-1
Previous: 8
Oktaha went 2-0 last week and dropped a spot. It’s obvious they didn’t do anything wrong, but a couple of teams did more last week than the Tigers.
Oktaha is still the class of 2A and should be a major player all season.
This week: Sat: vs Edmond North; Sat vs Southmoore (all games at the Edmond Spring Break Festival)
7. Dewar Dragons (A), 9-0
Previous: NR
Dewar make their debut this week in the “Dozen” on the back of an impressive 9-0 start. Their 9 wins include 2 dominant wins over 2A teams and a 4-2 win over Class A title contender Wright City on a neutral field.
This week: Thurs vs Davis; Thurs vs Fairview; Fri: vs Christian Heritage (all games at Wright City Festival
7. Elk City Elks (4A), 7-1
Previous: NR
Elk City may be making their debut in the “Dozen,” but seeing them in here is not a surprise. The Elks finished #8 in our final 2023 Dominant Dozen.
The Elks have looked impressive so far this season. Of their 7 wins so far, 2 come against Bishop McGuinness in a district sweep, one against a sneaky good Mount St Mary team, and they split a double header with (former) SSBR #1 Tuttle. In that win, Elk City held the Tiger scoreless on just 2 hits.
This week: Mon vs Valliant, Tues vs Bridge Creek, Wed vs Duncan (All games at Southeast Shootout)
5. Choctaw Yellowjackets (6A), 6-0
Previous: 8
Choctaw is the last undefeated team in 6A this year. However, their schedule so far hasn’t been “the best.” Their best win could arguably be Midwest City who is a 5A team (Mustang has struggled to a 2-8 start).
This week: Fri: vs Bishop Kelley; Sat vs Edmond Santa Fe (Edmond Spring Break Festival)
5. Sapulpa Chieftans (5A), 8-0
Previous: NR
Sapulpa is doing what they seem to alway do: win ball games. The Chieftans have had an impressive start to their season dominating their district foes so far and they have 2 wins over 6A teams: Broken Arrow (9-0) and Bishop Kelley (3-2).
This week: At the Gulf Shores Classic – at least 4 games (Tues vs Norman North)
4. Carl Albert Titans (5A), 7-1
Previous: 2
Carl Albert has looked impressive so far this year. They have wins over a good Midwest City, 2A juggernaut, Oktaha, and 6A staple, Deer Creek.
They’ve been so good, that they were on their track to be #1 after Tuttle lost, but the Elgin Owls had other plans on Friday night.
The margin is razor thin.
This week: No games scheduled
3. Washington Warriors (3A), 7-1
Previous: 4
The Warriors won 2 district series this week in convincing fashion. Not much else to report for the Warrirors.
This week: At the Gulf Shores Classic (vs Grove on Monday)
2. Tuttle Tigers (4A), 8-1
Previous: 1
Talk about razor thin. Tuttle loses 1 game to a state title contender in their class and they drop out of the #1 spot. However, the Tigers only drop 1 spot since they came back and beat that same team in the 2nd game of a double header.
It also doesn’t hurt that Tuttle beat Washington the week prior.
This week: Wed vs Weatherford; Thurs vs Oologah; Fri vs Newcastle (all games at Tuttle Spring Break Festival
1. Elgin Owls (5A), 4-0
Previous: NR
It’s not often a team goes from unranked to the top spot in the same week, but that is what we have here with Elgin.
The Owls dominated their first 3 opponents by a combined score of 49-0.
They then handed Carl Albert a loss where the Titans were never really in the game. After leading 4-1 after the 1st inning, the Owls controlled the rest of the game and won 9-2.
This week: Mon vs John Marshall (DH); Wed vs Chickasha (Tuttle Festival); Thurs vs Bethany & Weatherford (Tuttle Festival); Fri vs Oologah (Tuttle Festival)
