With it being our 2nd season here at Sooner State Baseball Report, we are trying some new things out to make our coverage even better. One of those things is awarding a Player of the Week and a Pitcher of the Week for the various levels. Each week we will send out a nomination form to each head coach and we will pick from those nominations.

We have awards in the small college division (NCAA D2, NAIA, NCCAA) and the junior college division.

Here are your winners for the week.

It is getting harder and harder each week to pick just one.

Small Colleges

Player of the Week

Peyton McDowall (INF), University of Science & Arts

In a week full of great performances, setting a school’s all time record can be the one thing that sets a player apart from the rest of the pack. That’s what happened with USAO’s Peyton McDowall this week.

McDowall not only set the Drovers’ all time HR mark (with more to come), he had a monster week doing it.

McDowall’s line: .734 (11-15), 4 HR, 2 2B, 3B, 10 RBI, 8 R, .789 OBP, 1.800 SLG (2.589 OPS)

Other nominees:

  • Tucker Bond, OPSU: .500 (4-8), 2 HR, 7 RBI, 3 R
  • Wyatt Grant, Cameron: .563 (9-16), 4 2B, 3B, 7 RBI, 2 R (Threw out 40% base stealers)
  • Carson Wright, NWOSU: .500 (8-16), 2 HR, 8 RBI, 4 R
  • Jhors Gomez, Southwestern Christian: .529 (9-17), 2 HR, 2B, 7 RBI, BB, 5 R, .667 OBP

Pitcher of the Week

Colby Diduch (RHP), OK Panhandle State

Diduch has been one of the 2 main starters for the Aggies so far this season. He has had some control issues with 28 walks in his first 6 starts to go along with 9 HBP. In his 7th start, Diduch seemed to figure something out and limited Wayland Baptist to just 1 earned run as the Aggies beat the Pioneers 18-1.

Diduch’s line: (W) 7 IP, 2 H, ER, 13 K

Other nominees:

  • Drew Durst, Cameron: 6 IP, 6 H, ER, 7 K, BB
  • Tristan Perry, USAO: G 2 (relief), 1-0, 6.1 IP, 10 H, 3 ER, 6K
  • Jacob Shaw, NWOSU: G 2 (relief), 1-0, 1 SV, 2.1 IP, H, 0 R, K, BB
  • Henrry Ogando, Southwestern Christian: 1-0, 7 IP, 9H, 2 ER, 2 K, 2 BB

Junior Colleges

Player of the Week

Wally Diaz (INF), Connors State College

We only had a few nominees for Player of the Week, but it would’ve been hard for anyone to beat what Wally Diaz did this past week. He came through for the Cowboys when he was put in that position and we can’t remember anyone at the JUCO level having as many RBIs as Diaz had this week so far this season.

In case you missed it, the Cowboys put up 30 runs on Eastern in game 1 of a double header on Saturday and Diaz’ 3 bombs were a hug reason for that (along with his 6 RBI).

Diaz’ line: .471 (8-17), 5 HR, 14 RBI, 2 BB, 6 R

Other nominees:

  • Owen Tracy, NOC Enid: .438 (7-16), 3 HR, 2B, 7 RBI
  • Cale Wetwiska, NOC Enid: .467 (7-15), 2 HR, 2B, 3B, 7 RBI, 4 R, 2 HBP, 2 SB (Cale is also one of our Pitching nominees)

Pitcher of the Week

Logan Taylor (RHP), NOC Tonkawa

Taylor has been a solid frontline pitcher for the Mavs so far this season, but in his outing against a tough Murray State lineup, he was even better. Led by Taylor’s performance in game 2 of their series, the Mavs clinched the series with the game 2 win and went on to sweep the series.

Taylor’s line: (W) 7 IP, 2 H, ER, 7 K, 4 BB

Other nominees:

  • Twine Palmer, Connors State: (W) 6 IP, 3 H, 7 K, BB
  • Cale Wetwiska, NOC Enid: (W) 5 IP, H, 0 R, 2 K, 2 BB
